If you sell a coin with full disclosure of a problem on eBay and...

... the buyer receives it and then resells it without that full disclosure, would you feel it is your duty to notify the collecting community, like say...posting it on this forum? I ask because I noticed just that recently. I sold a bunch of cleaned coins recently on eBay with full disclosure and now I see one of them has popped up for sale as a 'circulated' coin. But in reality, it's a cleaned and toned over coin. Just thought I'd ask what peoples' opinions were? Thanks!

Some people are going to tell you to out the seller.

Some people are going to tell you to mind your business.

Who says what could be helpful information for you at some point down the road.

    Good luck.

consider the seller one less ebayer you will have to compete with in the long run. Bad sellers out themselves eventually.

I suppose the best way to look at it is that I did the morally correct thing and sold them with their full disclosure of their problems. I guess I wanted to gather opinions. I just looked at another seller of whom I sold some other cleaned coins to as well and I see that they too also left full disclosure out of the listing on the resell. Didn't really net a whole ton of profit from their original price paid as they ran an auction and I was running "get them out of here" buy it now pricing.

I'm not going to make a list here of these "dealers". But I will note their intent to deceive and not deal with them in the future.

Edited to add: Good point, derryb. I don't really sell coins. I just wanted to get rid of my cleaned coins from my eBay gamblings...with proper full disclosure. image

No, it is not your duty to notify the collecting community, IMO. Just move on.

If we're talking about a common coin with very little value difference between a circulated example and a cleaned example, I wouldn't bother. If it's a situation where the non-disclosure could result in a real hose job, I wouldn't hesitate to out them.

I understand your frustration however I would suggest to just pick your battles the best you can. Pick the best and most important battles to fight. The rest of them you just have to let go. It's tough sometimes but that is my best advice.

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

Rather than outing the seller on a public forum, I'd report the issue to eBay and see if they'll pull the auction.

Why protect the identity of this seller who buys problem coins and resells them without disclosing the problems? Not a very ethical way of conducting business and he should be exposed so fellow forum members don't get ripped off. It's because of sellers like this that slabs are so popular with collectors.

There are a lot of eBay sellers who fleece unsuspecting buyers, because many of them don't know any better, or are as greedy as the seller. What do you expect in a fleamarket with a failing economy?

I once bought a Grant commem for around $90 or so off Ebay. The pics were ok but the lighting hid an obvious fairly harsh cleaning. I returned the coin with no real problem. I later saw the seller relisted it again with no disclosure of the cleaning and the same pics. This time it sold for $120 and the buyer left positive feedback so go figure. Oh and more on topic I see no reason to protect a sellers identity that conducts business as such. As the excuse of ignorance of the issues with the coins can't be used.

I would consider myself fortunate to have discovered (without it costing me anything) a person whose word I could not trust in any future transaction. I make make the appropriate mental note and move on.

No. I bought, several years ago, a coin that had been advertised cleaned and retoned. When I got it, for a
great price by the way, I found that those hairlines that the seller called cleaned were actually die polishing.
I hit a home run and did not inform the seller of my good fortune at his mistake.

You disclosed and it may just come back and bite the new owner in the arse by the new buyer.
