More 12 Caesars newps (Claudius As & Galba sestertius, both w/"LIBERTAS" reverses)

I've always liked that "desert" patina on ancient bronze, but usually one sees it on much later Romans from the Fourth and Fifth centuries, not on First century stuff like this. Usually one sees this "sandy" patina on hoards from the East (places like Syria), but perhaps since this one is supposedly from a Spanish mint, it ended up buried in Spain or North Africa somewhere. In any event, I liked the patina, the portrait, and the price. It was pretty affordable for a Claudius with this kind of detail.

<< <i>Claudius I AE AS 41-54 AD

Obverse: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P: Bare head left .
Reverse: LIBERTAS AVGVSTA/ S-C: Libertas standing facing with pileus, extending left hand.
Mint: Tarraco Minted: 50-54AD
Dia: 28 mm Wt: 9.5 gm Orient: 12/6
Ref: RIC-113, C-47

nVF Grade:

An attractive if a bit off centered strike of Claudius I. Well struck with handsome detail and nice desert highlights. From the Spanish mint. >>

Oh, and here's the massive Galba sestertius- a past favorite from my old collection. I sold it to a forum member a few years ago when I broke up the collection, but just swapped him a scarce-ish US gold coin to get this one back. (It was worth it to me- this is a pretty tough coin and I reckon it would carry a four-figure pricetag if it were just a little bit nicer.)

I've now reincarnated my collection up to seven of the Twelve Caesars. Last time I had eleven of the Twelve, lacking only Julius Caesar himself. This time I've got him out of the way, as well as some of the tougher Civil War (68-69 AD) emperors.

As of this post, I now have: #1-Julius Caesar, #3-Tiberius, #5-Claudius, #7-Galba, #8-Otho, #10-Vespasian, #12-Domitian.

I still need: #2-Augustus, #4-Caligula, #6-Nero, #9-Vitellius, #11-Titus.

In fact, I just got what was supposed to be a Titus As in a swap, but I believe it's misattributed (I'm pretty sure it is a Vespasian dupondius- if so, I've got two Vespasians). I'll post it when I get pictures of it.

Yeah, Vitellius is surprisingly available, considering his short reign. I always found Otho to be a lot tougher (which is why I bought back my old Otho denarius I'd sold a couple years ago). I check eBay less often than VCoins, but a lot of times you'll see the same stuff in both places.

I'm so stinkin' broke these days, I won't be adding to this set too often. This Claudius above was the first from this particular set that cost me less than a hundred bucks. (Well, actually, since the dealer is in GA like me, I had to pay sales tax, which brought it to $100.16 total.)

I like your avatar. Don't tell me you own a Faustina aureus?

Oooh... an aureus... there's a long-term goal of mine. WillieBoyd2 joined the "Aureus Club" in the last year, and I'm green with envy. The only ancient gold I've owned is a holed Zeno solidus (ex-Eliasberg). Still have that- it's the centerpiece on my "Holey Gold Hat".

Otho is tougher IMO too. Both Otho & Vitellius are out of my price range at this time.

I do ebay and bargainbinancients.com more then anywhere else. I only use Vcoins for pricing usually. But there is a few like Trajan, Nerva, Hadrian, Crispina and some others I may be getting in the next month or two.

As for my avatar, its actually Crispina, stock image I found on google, http://www.romancoins.info/h2005-mint-crispina.jpg Other is Orbiana. Both ladies I would like to acquire by years end.

And sadly I own no roman gold image Willie is always posting some great stuff!

I should've recognized Crispina. I had a pretty cool Crispina sestertius in the old collection I sold. She sorta looks like one of the Faustinas in that portrait, though.

The last time around, I was collecting the ladies, too, when I could afford 'em. Basically "A to Z" (Augustus to Zeno- everything I could afford in that wide range). Usually my operative ceiling is $500/coin, and seldom that high.

I looked at your gallery. You have some nice pieces.

Yeah that portrait of Crispina is a bit like Faustina Jr.

I have a soft spot for the ladies but for now, dont have any specialty. I just buy what I like image

I usually have a $200 cap on a single coin. Thats why big coins like your building are probably a long ways away.

Thanks for the comment on my coins, its a hodge podge of common & rare, im happy with it so far.

I would like to get more greeks, especially greek silver but alot of fakes and they seem pricier.

Ancients in general are alot of fun though. I love the history they have.
