A dealer friend offered this to me in January (already in the holder) for melt back when gold had dipped to about $1340. I don't collect gold and I don't really collect foreign coins, but I couldn't say no:
This $5 gold is part of the my 1861 dated Civil War gold set. That year the gold coin mintages hit new highs for just about every gold denomination except the Three Dollar Gold Piece. I've kept the grades on the low Mint State levels to hold down the costs. Even the common dates like this get pricey for many pieces in MS-63 and better.
I think the Union thought at first that they could pay for the war with gold. The Union quickly found out the South could not be put down so easily so the North had to resort to bonds and paper money.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.

That is an excellent pickup for melt.
Here's my first attempt posting one of the few pics I have of mine.
I guess I failed, don't know why I can't see that 50K file when I click on it. Sorry.
