Something really BIG happened in my little town in 1859..

It's referred to as the "Dogtown Nugget" and it's really BIG. It weighed in at a whooping 54 pounds, that's right LBS. We celebrate this find every year with a parade and a big BBQ with a gold nugget raffled off. Paradise is a small town up in the mountains in northern Calif. Butte county was the 3rd largest gold producers in the state and we are still finding many ounces of gold just 20 minutes from where I live. Many folks are out with there shovels and pans from all over the state, I just met two guys from Kentucky out here poking around for gold. Butte creek and the feather river has a lot of activity already and will get more active in the fall. There were no images of the huge nugget they found in 1859 but the images I have posted for you are just copies of the eye witnesses account of the nugget. The nugget was taken to San francisco and sold. Many, many coins were struck just from this one 54 pound nugget. I thought this was a cool story and you all might like to hear it.....Joe

Very cool, Joe -- it's hard to imagine the excitement of coming across a nugget that size.

And of course, everything is better with a barbecue.image

Wow that's a whopper! There's a story somewhat similar in Charlotte, NC. A farmer had found a huge gold nugget about the size of a potato on his farm, but this was before gold was even discovered in NC. The guy was using the gold nugget for a door stopper and didn't realize what he had. But he soon discovered the large rock was indeed gold and he found many more potato sized nuggets on his property. This story was supposedly the start to the gold rush in NC. This property was nicknamed the "potato patch" because of the many potato sized nuggets that were discovered on this property.

The Charlotte area is suppose to be still rich in gold, estimated about 60% of the gold is still in the ground.

I also read about this "rock" used a a door stopper. If I remember right some guy conned the owner out of his "rock" for just a few bucks.

Wow, cool post, Joe. You could buy Andy's whole inventory of Buffaloes with that "little" nugget. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the neat story. Too bad the original nugget was melted or that a picture of it wasn't taken.image

Having panned for gold (in many places, including northern CA), I cannot imagine the thrill of finding such a nugget. Heck, I was in orbit finding a 7 gram nugget.... Cheers, RickO
