NEWP 1892-S Barber Half

Worth sending in for secure +? Any chance for an upgrade? The scratch that goes through the center of the head band is on the slab. What generation slab is this?

Probably returned in a GENUINE holder for those obverse hairlines!

I would be very hesitant about sending it in, with today's strict standards for hairlines.

Looks to me like a definite "Genuine" grade.

Here we go again...lol just returned a 93-S with same problem. Sellers pics didn't show them

  • leave it in that holder. That is the first style after the holders with the band. 1990 to 1995. when I see a coin in a holder that old I know the coin surfaces are stable. Maybe someday even that holder will carry a premium.

I am not worried about the obverse hairlines as much as the one large obverse scratch. Could come back genuine, could come back AU55 at best.
  • Hairlines? The coins circulated. I have a little problem with the obv. spots. Still after this amount of time the coin is stable.

I don't like the spots either. Unless you bought it cheaply and intend to sell it, it would be a "return" for me.

I believe PCGS guarantees the coin to holder at the current grade(AU55) no matter what.

The best thing about the coin might be the holder.

    My opinion: Genuine, cleaned.

  • after seeing the big pic I wouldn't buy it for my collection.

I question whether the coin surfaces are stable. The coin was dipped and is now retoning unattractively. Five or ten years ago the coin probably had
fewer spots and I believe it will continue to deteriorate in appearance. Not a candidate for an upgrade.

92-S I would likely send it back, I don't like those spots...if that was a 93-S it would be a tougher decision. PCGS guarantee is only based on their value estimate, not real market value for something like a 93-S.
