Nice Merc. (1927 MS65)

Just put this on hold with a dealer. I don't own many Mercs., but this is a pretty one for a 1920s coin, so I bought it. We discussed the toning, and both of us thought it looked similar to 1950s mint set toning, yet it obviously isn't from a mint set. Perhaps it was stored in plastic similar to the later mint sets? Some people wouldn't like the toning because it's "splotchy," but I like this type of toning a lot. I think it's tough to AT a coin to look this way- maybe that's why I appreciate it. LOL, coin doctors will go to work trying to duplicate this look after reading my comments.

Great looking coin. I could see that toning as coming from a dime saver book from a bank. I agree too that this type of toning would be very hard to at. image

The dime saver book is an interesting idea. I could definitely see that leading to this type of toning. By the way, I forgot to mention it's PCGS MS65, not FB.

What I can see from the image is the coin is really well struck. I can bet that coin is a knock out in hand.
Attractive early Mercury toners are not too common in the market place. Good pick up image

I can't wait to get the coin, actually. I don't see many original toners from the 1920s. Almost all of the great toned coins are 1930s to 1940s, for some reason. That is odd, considering the older coins had a longer time to tone. I guess storage methods changed over the years, so teens and twenties coins are more likely to have the brown, spotty toning that invariably gets dipped off.
