Looks like I owe TonedRarities and PCGS a BIG APOLOGY...

Some days ago in another thread TonedRarities was sharing his FUN Newps and I called him out calling this "nuclear toned" 1960-D an artful AT job:
Today (yeah, it takes this old brain some time to connect the dots) I decided to "plug-in" the cert numbers of the coins that bracketed the cert # of the suspect coin. (It's 18228661 if you kids want to try this at home!)
What I found is pretty strong evidence that the coin is indeed an EOR:
Cert. #18228626 does not exist.
Cert.# 18228627, 18228628, .... all the way up to 18228661 are ALL 1960-D Franklins!
Of course, there still exists the possibility that the other 30 something 1960-D's (which were largely or wholly brilliant, judging from the large group of white 1960-D's FTZ is currently selling on Ebay) as part of a "set-up" to try and add legitimacy to the wild toners(s) in the TPG'ers eyes.
But good old Occam's Razor says that it is MOST LIKELY that these rainbows are legit EOR coins.
I am humbled and have hopefully learned a lesson from this.
A couple of upsides are that it is exciting to know that such coins still exist out there waiting to be discovered. And that PCGS graders likely got it right.
The downside is that this adds re-enforcement to the Frankie-nay sayers rhetoric who tell us that this is precisely why Franklins are an underperforming series: there are still a lot potential Gems sitting around raw.

<< <i>So by looking up cert numbers is what makes you think this coin is now NT? Wouldn't just looking at the coin allow you to form your opinion the coin is NT or AT? Not tryin to be an arse but it just doesn't make any sense to me is all. >>
I believe his point is that if someone submitted a full roll (or close to it), it would make sense that a coin in that submission could have rather wild end-roll colors amidst a sea of white examples.

By looking at the coin, his opinion was the coin was AT. Through due diligence, his opinion now is that the coin is most likely NT.
...you'd make a crummy politician!!!
I don't get it - that's my favorite ride.

Good post and good for you to be gracious in your shared thoughts.
It isn't always that easy to tell the difference sometimes.

<< <i>For your punishment I sentence you to go through the "It's A Small World After All!" ride ten times!

When my wife and i took my son to see some universities in the L.A. area, we played hookey while he was at school....i never, never miss going on that ride.....unless it's closed.
Like in Toned Frankies. The brown looks right, but the rainbow was suspect. You paid due diligence and came to a different conclusion.
, also apologize to the many forum member's that are not quite sure why you so brazenly label nearly every colored Franklin you see as A.T ...............
Perhaps your recent humbling discoveries well help you realize that it is extremely difficult , even for a series specialist , to make such calls based on posted images .

<< <i>Whether or not you were right initially, and whether or not you are now, good for you for making such an apology, and in that fashion. >>
+1
then I guess I will just have to live without toned coins. I gots me a box
of Crayola Crayons and I am prepared to make my own.

I'm sorry you like them.

1. They both were in the same roll at opposite ends with one of them reversed....not likely
2. They were in different rolls, stored identically for years and came out looking almost exactly alike.
3. They shared the same Easy Bake oven.
Monty, which door is it?

<< <i>So those 2 "sister" coins indicate one of the following:
1. They both were in the same roll at opposite ends with one of them reversed....not likely

3. They shared the same Easy Bake oven.
