Why do you think this coin seems to have fallen out of favor?

The coin has many things going for it (IMO): nice design, low mintage, gold.

I've been flummoxed by this, too. The topic alone--one of our most venerable institutions--warrants great interest. Then again, kids don't hear about it like they did in my day. Dunno.

one of the few I missed out on buying that I actually wanted.

but I missed out on quite of offerings over the years, if I lost sleep over each id be wired for sound right about now.

I cannot figure out why the UNC always sell for more than the proof's. Proofs have a lower mintage, not by much but still?

No, other way around the unc.s have lower mintage by quite a bit. Proofs many times are more attractive but outsell uncs. This coin should be one of the "keys" to the $5 commem gold series IMO and I like it a lot better than the Capitol Visitor for example.

That's odd Coinfacts has them listed as:

Proof: Mintage: 8,948
Unc: Mintage: 9,068

Are there numbers off?

Yes. Maybe they transposed numbers from one of the options.

I actually bought the Proof in the late 90s based on the red books erroneous mintage for these two coins. As late as 2005 the red book listed the unc as 21,000 and the Proof as less than 9,000.

I see this error was corrected in the 2007 Red Book, showing the unc as the lower mintage coin now.

According to a source I consider very reliable, the following were minted:

Proof: 21840 (The key in the proof series)
Unc: 9068

I have never seen the Proof sell for more than the most common date gold.
