In going over some auction catalogs I picked up at the ANA Summer Seminar, I found these two lots from the Stack's 4/21/77 sale. #1147 brought $525 and #1148 brought $700. The striking date for the 1908-S is 3 days before the reported mintage began.

Edwin Leach was in San Francisco in both 1908 and 1909. The 1909 VDB matte proofs were struck 7/30 and accepted 8/2. Frank Leach was involuntarily separated from the Director's position (Taft wanted him out). Lastly, Taft was President; TR was in Africa shooting everything that moved. Frank L. went back to the Bay area to become president of the Oakland water works.
