1950's & 1960's FB: Is it better to collect sets or graded stars?

I have several complete football sets from the 1950's that are raw but NM condition and several graded stars from the 1960's. I am torn between grading all the stars from the 50's and selling the commons or keeping the sets complete and keep adding more sets to my collection.

What is the overall feeling towards the future of Vintage Football?

I think that if a vintage baseball collector wanted to add vintage football cards to their collection they might add only stars and not complete sets. Same goes for all the new younger collectors of these new shiny auto-game used-jersey filled cards, they will look for only stars and not complete sets if they ever wanted to add vintage in their collection.

My opinion only, I can see somewhat of a upturn in vintage football stars as a whole because of just how popular football has become in the last 20+ years.

As a practical matter I only collect HOFers in PSA slabs. Not for investment purposes, but for display and authenticity. I decided to stop collecting set because I couldn't keep up with all the cards and the space they took up. In football I have complete sets 1964 to 1989. My goal is to have every main stream HOFer from 1933 to 1963. I'm about 3/4s there. I'd love to have complete sets because I love football, but its just too many cards.

I feel like from an investment and future value standpoint, HOF and star cards have more appeal. If you decide you want to quickly move something at some point in the future, having a Namath or a Jim Brown to move would make me feel more comfortable than an entire raw set. And grading an entire raw set could be cool but costly and not a great return on investment.

I don't think vintage football has hit its peak yet, but if space is a concern sell off the commons and keep the stars. The commons I would research and have the low pop commons/high numbers graded by PSA and then sell them, the rest of the commons you could sell as nice raw examples or lump them together as a starter set.
