Same here especially when it's used to disparage other dealers coins.

  • Actually, rather than the term 'dreck', I am sick of the actual dreck.

Someone's dreck is another's collection. Only obnoxious elitists and snobs employ such disparaging terms, which, places them on a social scale comparable to the material they are criticizing. Cheers, RickO

I collect both dreck and non-dreck and some widgets, I don't mind either term, and wish I had understood the classes many years ago.

Creating another new thread on the topic seems inconsistent with that sentiment.

QDB has that photograde book out. It's a comprehensive analysis about grading coins. Little is spoken about "pricing" them and to this end, some of us find offense at the terms of endearment known in circles for years regarding the majority of coins.
When a coin drops below a certain price and grade level for some of the more astute collectors, many coins tend to fall into the " schlock, dreck, and even junk silver" category. This is not what they are, but they're referred to as that.

It's not a bad thing or a good thing. It's just what it is.
Please do not be lulled into thinking that those who use these terms are elitists or snobs. Think of stuff as being what it is in this old coin world. Every coin is looking for a happy collector.

    Where's the "Don't care" option?
  • Is "dreck" the new "widget"?
  • ecichlidecichlid Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭
No, it's not a coin term.
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.

I hate it, probably because a lot of coins in my collection would be called dreck image

Frankly, I didn't realize that it's meaning was so, for a lack of a better term, dirty. Seems like maybe it should go.

    I hate it as well.

To me "dreck" sounds like bottom of the barrel stuff. According to some its supposed to mean any coin that is in an overgraded holder.

In my opinion the term "dreck" doesn't sit right or sound like a description of an overgraded coin. I mean I personally wouldn't refer to an 1804 dollar as "dreck" even if it had been overgraded. It would be a coin I would love to own.

Instead of "dreck" I would use "subpar" or "substandard".
