The PCGS "Little One" announced!

On the PCGS home page, there is an announcement of the new barcode which will be placed on the slab tags. This also debuts on March 25. I doubt that this is the change that is going to get us to resubmit all of our coins, but who knows?

    I believe that you are correct.....by my reckoning, PCGS has enough bar code room to go to 4 decimals....~62.5812.

    What about enough data to get more varieties listed?

    I'm intrigued by space #14: "grade modifier"

    Just what might that mean... perhaps + or - ??

    Well, with this information about the barcode, PCGS accidentally revealed one of the three "new things" that will be announced.

    There is a field for "grade modifier". It says that there are only two values for this field (a zero or a one). That suggests that PCGS will announce some type of PQ grading, and there will be only two possibilites. A zero would indicate a regular grade. A one would indicate premium quality.

    So, PCGS will be announcing a premium quality grading systems, which will be a single indicator that a coin is PQ.

    I just sent another forum member my bar code reader so he can scan his slabs. My brother invented it, so it works very well without any drivers or software. It reads all slabs from ANACS through ACG, including PCGS and PCI, old version.


    Bar code readers are like perfect, fast typists.

    At the last Long Beach Coin show, I was selling a few coins to Heritage. The buyer used a bar code reader on an NGC coin and on a PCGS coin. The Heritage database was able to display the coin's auction history, prices on grey, bluesheets, simliar coins for sale. The software also translated NGC barcode information to a PCGS number, where again the coin's history and information was displayed. IF PCGS were to send out software to all the member dealers, I am sure a coins database history can be downloaded quite easily.

    I was going to post the same thing as you and others have mentioned....


    I'll just add that the new barcode could be #1 and the "Grade modifier" could be #2

    and

    I'll note that digit is not marked ---> "Reserved for future use" as the first three digits are. So..... It sure reads like it is definitely going to be used.

    No....unless the current system of graders/time alloted/finalizers/etc is changed. Grading can't be more accurate unless something is changed or added. Simply calling a coin PQ on their part is still just an in-house 5-10 second opinion. If PCGS decides to add a separate finalizer indepedent of PCGS then I could see that nullifying CAC on their coins. That wouldn't change still needing CAC for NGC though.

    And calling a coin PQ can't be the BIG ONE since NGC already came up with the general idea and CAC modified it some. PCGS would only be the 3rd one down this road. Decimals could be the thing but then again Accugrade with Alan Hager already came up with this idea in the 1970's. Unless there is way to ensure accuracy to .1 then merely labeling doesn't accomplish anything. Certainly ACG never had .1 accuracy in their system.

    It is widely known that NGC is starting a PQ grade designation, so PCGS must counter.

    Having the TPG designating PQ does not obviate the niche for another party to approve the coin.

    My initial reaction to this news was, "Well, I am never going to send my coins to get them regrade and PQ'ed". However, like a case of coins in which some are stickered and some are not, if you have some "PQ" coins in your collection/case, the assumption will be that those that are not "PQ" did not make the cut. PCGS would be smart to keep the blue levels to add to the confusion. image

    BTW, I doubt that this is The Big One™. If it is, the PCGS higher ups are lacking in creativity and spirit of innovation (and I do not think that this is the case).

    I suppose speculation is entertainment for some people, but the forum members here seem even worse than young children at
    Christmas time. I sincerely hope (and, to be truthful, I think it will) the announcement lives up to the expectations of this group. Oh yes, there will be the inevitable grousing and b*tching.. some individuals here would complain about winning the lottery. All in all, I expect substantial news on the 25th and believe it will be, for the most part, positive. Cheers, RickO

    Some one mentioned up to 4 decimal places in the bar-code. What if they are like the four criteria used in grading sports card? Centering, corners, edges, and surfaces become strike, luster, surfaces, and eye appeal. Just a thought.

    What about one that simply lacks the plus? I can see how these will be viewed as inferior as well.

    Picture a dealer who is known to carry all stickered coins. The one without a bean stands out like the proverbial sore thumb. This is tomorrow's PCGS coin without the "plus" (or whatever they're going to call it).

    I'd have to think that only a plus would be used....Example a coin that is so close to the next grade but didn't make the cut

    Well........it's about time! Hard to believe they'll start doing this after 20 years in the grading coin business.

    The addition of a + and - sign is nothing new. I've used it for years on grades and full steps since others have been using them way before my time anyway. The need for a grading company to spell out a grade for anyone, that person's grading abilities and purchasing skills are in dire need of help. If you're not looking at a substantial number of coins over a long period of time before you buy, you haven't gained the necessary experience that tells you you're buying the right coins. Learning how coins must look, whether they've been cleaned or messed with etc., takes time. One of the fastest ways to buy the right coin is learning why one coin sold for substantially more than another in the same grade. But you must see both coins in hand or two highly detailed pictures to hopefully figure it out.
