1952 Washingtom Quarter mintmarks- what's the deal?

First, I'm proud to say that I just cherried my second 1952-D huge D (FS-501) Washington Quarter:

According to the CPG, there are 2 other sizes of D's that year.

The same day I found the huge D, in the same batch of coins, I found this 1952-S quarter:

It has an S mintmark that is not only a different font, but is also much larger than what seems to be the more common (at least in the 15 - 20 1952-S quarters I found- there was only 1 of these). Here's a 'normal one for comparison:

My question is: Is the 1952-S known with different mintmark sizes, or have I made a discovery here? I guess a follow-up would be: what the h*ll was going on @ the mint in 1952 with all of the different MM punches floating around? The CPG says that the huge D punch is unknown on any other US coin...

  • The larger S mintmark is the san serif type...but I don't know the rarity for quarters. I do cents.
