Are coins the big "IT" for you, or is there something else...?

Even though everyone doesn't have one, I'll just say Family not withstanding.

For me, it's always gonna be outdoor adventure-sports. Here's a shot of me from last weekend up in the hills behind my house:

I really enjoy hiking. This summer I am going to buy a $50 "park pass" so I can go to any park without paying the fee's and I also want to buy a kayak and take it to Del Valle whenever I can. Outdoors rock!

Wow, mountain biking is also a passion of mine. Nice shot. Well on the flipside this is what I like to do in the mountains this time of the year. Heading to Montana for some spring skiing soon. Hopefully, I can keep up with the boy this year. MJ

Coins are fun and a great pastime when nothing else in the real world is going on.
That is why I call this a fun hobby.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Outdoor stuff for sure...hiking, biking, skiing, etc. Love to spend time in the mountains or on the ocean/beach. Too bad I live like 18 hours from any major range and 8 hours from any 1/2 way decent beach! So barring that, it is airplanes...

I retired a little early to turn a hobby into a business. My company teaches motorcycle roadracing and runs practice "track days" for the sportbike public. (It gets the lunatics off the street.)

Coin collectors are suppose to be the nerdy, geeky type. Why do you want to change that? LOL

I love coins but anything with a motor can be a blast. I do not lose as much money with the coins. Racing quads and cars is expensive!!

This is a nice thread - I like seeing the other side of coin people. And those are some great photos - especially that one of Matt on the bike in the air!

For me, I absolutely LOVE whitewater river rafting (I'm even going to mix coins and rafting by signing up for the whitewater trip at the ANA Summer Seminar though I suspect it will be more of a float trip without much whitewater!). I've been doing it for many years, and have rafted most of the California rivers, the Snake out of Jacksonhole, and my favorite (which I've done twice) is the Middlefork of the Salmon out of Stanley, Idaho. The photos below were of our last trip on the Yuba River about an hour north of Sacramento. It had mostly class 4's and 5's - this rapid is aptly named Maytag and is a class 5. The raft going through the rapids is not me and my family since I was the one taking the photos. These people were the first to go and we all watched because we didn't think they would make it since they were all "high" from the get go, but they did just fine. The two boys standing by watching them are my boys Erik and Troy. The close up on the raft is my family.

Charmy! That rapid is called "Maytag". Very cool "scary" looking rapid with less consequence than you'd think. It's on the North Fork of the Yuba right near Downieville. I spent about a decade whitewater kayaking, and that float was a regular stop of mine. Kids put a damper on the sport for me. 12 hour plus days don't mesh well with parenting. I certainly do miss it, though. I'd love to post a photo, but all my pics of that sport are from the old film camera days.

  • Lots of "outdoorsy" folks here, count me in that group, though not as extreme as some of you. Coin collecting just a nice diversion for me.

We stayed at a cute hotel in Downieville when we took this trip (even did a little wine tasting at one of the little wine shops in town). And yes, Maytag sure looked a lot more intimidating than it actually was when we rode it. We went right through that rapid with no problem, but we hit a rapid further down stream that flipped us all out (except the guide). The water sure was cold and it took my breath away briefly, but we were not unfamiliar with being bucked into the water from previous trips, so my husband and kids ended up floating down stream, but I popped up under the raft and just made my way to the outside edge where the guide pulled me back in.

We've been taking the boys rafting as soon as they were old enough to go on the better rivers. So it's certainly possible to blend kids with some of your favorite activities.

By the way, to keep this coin-related, here's a photo I took in Downieville of their local gallows - it's a reproduction of one that was built in 1885 and reminds me of this Conder Token that Yellowkid has, and one which I covet! image

I used to play golf 3 or 4 times a week. I work night shift so we could be at the course when it opened. A botched carpal tunnel surgery (a cut nerve) took care of my golfing. Being on pain medication for cronic nerve pain took care of everything else. Now I work and do coins.

I have two other delightful distractions besides coins. Sports cars have been a passion of mine since before I could drive legally. Currently I have a Mercedes SLK350 (6 speed) and I am looking a buying a Lotus Europa - circa 1974. My other passion is music and audio gear, strictly 2 channel. Magnepan 3.6 speakers driven by McIntosh MC501 mono blocs make listening magical.

Noting better than a good walk in the woods. My mountain home sits 200 yards from the Appalachian Trail. I am heading out right now with my dog to walk the trail for about 10 miles.
