A question about the characteristics of a 1928 Peace dollar

If you cant really tell under magnification, is there a way to determine if a 1928 Peace dollar is legitimate or if it has had the Mintmark (S)removed? Is there a certain characteristic that the 1928 Peace dollar has that the 1928 S doesnt?

Thank you for your response-

I think I would try comparing your coin to the photos and descriptions of both the P & the S varieties posted on the vamworld site. I think that you should be be able to nail it down by the process of elimination.

Yes, Die 1 has a raised short die line extending from the B of liberty past the ray. Die 2 has a series of raised lines extending through the midsection of the E in liberty and into the field and Die 3 has a thick die line in the folds of Miss Liberty s hair. You need to see a picture to see where this one is. You can find it in the book from PCGS "Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection".

    Good luck!

Here's an article by Michael Fahey from Coin World some years back. This should be helpful to you.

Very informative. Always surprising how a thread with an innocuous title can turn out to be quite educational. Cheers, RickO
