Payments on eBay

I was looking at a coin on eBay. The dealer only accepted PayPal. I neither have nor want a PayPal account. I have always paid by either Postal money order or personal check. My eBay rating is 100% with 103 count. I sent the dealer a message under ask the dealer and explained that I was interested in the coin but didn't have a PayPal account and asked that he check my eBay record. I have always sent payment on the morning after winning the item. Didn't even hear back from the dealer. Oh well, such is life.

Ebay sellers love buyers that pay by check. Email him again and offer postal money orders (the safest through-the-mail payment for the seller). Buyer still has paypal protection through ebay. Seller pays no paypal fees.

  • I sell a lot on the bay and love when someone offer POMO... No fees... Instant 3% bonus

I wouldn't mind someone not using paypal when I sell, but I know there are some "larger" dealers who prefer the paypal method, even with the 3% hit, as it is quicker and easier for them.
Not the best business sense, from the monetary standpoint, but it is what it is and that's what they want.

You did the right thing by asking. If they don't answer, it is their loss (or, if you really wanted that item, and were willing to spend a couple bucks more, you could ask someone with a paypal account to buy it, you reimburse them for the coin + shipping to you).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Keep asking. It's insane for someone to only accept Paypal.....there are too many fees!

check payments are getting fewer and fewer as ebay wins the war with the buyers and racks up the fees (2.2% in my case).

However, paypal has created a new option--you can pay thru paypal with your credit card without opening an account. perhaps that will work for you. Just buy it, click on paypal payment, and it will give you an option to login or make a one time payment with credit card. --Jerry
  • A USPS money order is much more profitable for the seller. It just adds a bit of time before the seller can ship the item.

Because so many buyers now have paypal I'm about to cancel my credit card processor in favor of this option and save $40/month or so. --jerry

USPS money order can be validated or cashed at the post office the day it is received, no need to delay shipment. I cash them right before I hand the clerk the item that was paid for with the money order.

If they don't have enough cash to cash it or if you prefer to deposit it into a bank account, just ask the postal clerk to verify that it is authentic and to check it against their "fraud alert" of stolen money orders. Once the money order is blessed by the postal clerk, then hand the clerk the item for shipment.

I always chuckle when a buyer points out their excellent eBay feedback. Hello? All buyers have 100%.

That said, any time I get a question asking if I'll accept a check or money order they get an immediate "you betcha" response.

I prefer cash or money order
but will reluctantly settle for check

a $30 check that takes my bank 2 weeks to bounce
and charge me $30 for bounced check

does not make me a happy camper

especially after item has long been shipped

I was referring to the text part of the Feedback. 90% of my feedbacks comment on fast payment. I realize that you dealers need to turn your money over quickly and hence I send payment as fast as possible. I have never wanted to be part of the problem. Our reputations are all we have in this world that outlives us. I can't remember a time that I have bought something on eBay and the payment wasn't in the mail the next day. The reason for the next day is I work night shift and usually do my eBaying in the middle of the night.

I would bet that an overwhelming majority of sellers never read the feedback left for their buyers unless a problem arises. And by then, it's usually kind of late to make a good impression. image

The shipment delay is waiting for the money order to arrive........ I always ship my Sunday auctions on Monday morning since most are paid for within 12 hours. M.O.'s usually arrive Thursday or Friday.
