Wow! NT SAEs are still doing ok, it seems

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,625 ✭✭✭✭✭
Getting ready to put some PCGS NT SAEs into Teletrade, to get their special ($100 off seller's fees), and I decided to try ebay first.
Hard to price some of these, and I wasn't going to do the $0.99 start since I really don't care if they sell on ebay or not.

Just had a buyer for my 2004 with the BIN. I will honestly say that I may have priced it too low, but I am not sad with the price either.

I had thought, for some reason, that the SAE market was down. I am rethinking that now. At least, for NT SAEs. Bear in mind that this wasn't a neon toned, super slick, SAE. This was just a nicely, naturally, toned, SAE.

Probably would have sold for 2x as much a couple of years ago when the market was all hot, but, oh well image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

No. I don't think it was luck. They are easily NT and I did get them graded at different times. Times when people were saying "oh my! PCGS is SOOOO tough on toned coins right now". Just like current environment.
None of these were toned overnight or with chemicals added, etc. No "taco bell napkins". These took months and months, in after market holder that is very popular for display. They were just out for display and not "helped" along.

So, no, I don't think it was luck

2008-W wasn't in the tube from the mint....the "-W" (non-proof) were sold separately and in the little capsules. Not really the environment for toning unless taken out....and burnished, they probably tone a bit different. I don't know on that yet as I haven't removed any of my "-W" from the Mint's capsules except the ones I sent to PCGS for grading (they were all MS69/70).

I've said it before and I'll say it again, my SAE's have been in a Dansco Album for a very, very long time and literally none have blossomed into eye popping toners. They do develop a muddy tone but only on the outside edges and only those closest to the spine of the Dansco where air can circulate.

I also happen to know, via your own posts, that you have a storage closet where you keep your SAE's simply because they do tone up nicely in that location. The toning can also be augmented with the use of "Happy Birthday" SAE holders as you have also posted. So lets look at the entire picture.

No, you don't add any secret ingredients to achieve this toning over night

    But

You do keep them in a location where you know they will tone and yes it takes many, many months but the net result is a toned SAE.

I think its a little iffy to argue NT since NT is NOT supposed to be "intentional" and what you have, is most certainly intentional.

    I'm just sayin.............

P.S. As I said in my original reply, I think your lucky you submitted them when you did and I'll stand behind that.

PSS - Yes, my genuine coin sat in a taco bell napkin for many months.

PSSS - Perhaps I should buy some SAE holders instead?

Maybe you should buy the holders and not the napkins.
Yep, a lot of my SAEs sit in the closet (not a "storage closet" as you have stated, nor have I ever said "storage closet").
Yep, they sit with the same air/environment I sit in daily in my home office. No secret/no surprise.

And, as you have restated, from what I stated, I don't augment them with napkins or anything. They are "natural". I, therefore, do not believe I was "lucky", but rather, I believe the PCGS graders know the difference when they see it.

Guess you just find that you want to go after my post/thread/me/my SAEs, and I guess, on the boards, that is your right. Again, I don't think I was "lucky" as you stated.

btw, lee, for your "I think its a little iffy to argue NT since NT is NOT supposed to be "intentional" and what you have, is most certainly intentional." comment....

There are other threads to debate that on....you have been around long enough, as I have, to see/participate in those threads. Aside from stating that, to me, "intentional" does not rule out "NT", I have no desire to do it in my thread. I'll refrain from commenting back to you further in this thread as I have nothing further to say to you in the thread. We will disagree and I am more than fine with that.

  • Maybe one day we'll find some old mint correspondence that shows the particular canvas bags the Morgan dollars were stored in, were chosen specifically because they knew that, in time, some of the silver dollars would exhibit nice colorful toning. Then, since the intent was there, suddenly all previously thought NT Morgans now become AT.

    What a bunch of hooey.

IMHO, this whole AT vs. NT arguement/issue is one of the most damaging aspects of the coin hobby.image

BTW, I have a few SAEs that have been sitting in Dansco albums for quite a few years, some since the late 80's, which exhibit similar toning. Looks OK, but I don't put a premium on them vs. the ones that haven't toned (some have and some have not). Starting in 1987 or '88, I bought 2 Dansco albums and started adding a new SAE to each one every year and have been doing so ever since. There was never any intention for them to tone in any way (I guess that makes them all NT). It was simply the best way I knew to store them. They are still there and will stay, along with a new one each year until full.

I apologize for hijacking the thread. It was not my intent (there's that word again!).image

It's cool, Stubby, I don't think you hijacked it image
And, for what it's worth, I agree with you.
