Kennedy half questions....

- Can someone post a DDO from the early 70's. Do they look different from year to year. Where exactly is it easiest to see.
- What errors, if any, command a premium? Clashes, die cracks, DDR (machine doubling most likely), cuds, etc.
- This missing designers initals in the early 70's. Are they 100% gone or just barely there? I have one that's about 90% gone, qualify?

Thanks in advance. I can't find anything on the net nor on the site that ref. this stuff...

You need to buy a Cherrypickers' Guide Volume II, fourth edition, which shows many (not all) of the most popular varieties. Yes they vary from year to year, and it's a long list. Cuds and machine doubling are not worth much at all, but some Kennedy varieties go for hundreds of dollars. The 1972-D No FG is among the most elusive Kennedy varieties, but there are many, many others. Doubled Die Obverses, Doubled Die Reverses, Repunched Mintmarks, on and on it goes. A lot of the Doubled Die Obverse coins show "notching" on the corners of some of the letters on IN GOD WE TRUST and/or LIBERTY--but that is an overgeneralization. James Wiles has also written a complete variety volume, but it might be overwhelming for a beginner in the series. You can also check www.conecaonline.org.

You can also look at the Kennedy Half Complete Variety Set (mine is #3 All-Time Finest) to give you some idea of the varieties and the existing populations--but the PCGS variety prices are a joke. Good luck!

  • Thank you. More interested in pictures of the DDO. I think I've found some DDR. I have one coin that has doubling of all of the letter around the coin.... My son is having fun going through thousands of half dollars looking for silver. I've found about 40 coins that have nice clashes, big die breaks and the such. Links to pictures. I can't find any. I'll see if he wants to invest into a book... Any more help is appeciated.

Usually, the motto for DDO. The S's in STATES usually indicate a DDR.

High grade DDO's, 1972-D No FG, and any coin in the CPG and required for the PCGS Complete Variety Registry. Unless they are extremely dramatic, I cannot think of a Machine Doubled coin that would command a premium. DDR coins are true doubled die's and can command a premium. (At least when I'm buying that is! image )

The initials must be completely gone and this should not be from die age or grase filling but from die abrasion. There is a variety for 1982-P where the "F" is missing but I know little about it.

Join the ANA and check out a copy of the Kennedy Half Dollar Book, An Attribution and Pricing Guide by Dr. James Wiles. Or look for one on eBay as they occasionally come up for sale.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Be aware that machine doubling runs rampant on these early Kennedy Half Dollars and more typically on the reverse than the obvserse.

There is a CUD-001 listed in the Kennedy Book but I've never seen one traded openly.
As for the 1990, it looks like it could have been a nice grease filled die at one point in time. Rim reeding is usually the first thing to go on these coins and on IKE Dollar primarily because copper is way soft compared to the copper-nickel cladding.
