Can't think of any reason to fly that far when the ANA spring show is an hour and a half drive (well, 2 hours if OK or TX highway patrol is reading ) away later this month.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
Actually, one big driver for the show when it's easy to make (much easier when I lived in Boston vs. Seattle) is that my parents live there. But my parents were in LA for a family event this weekend, as was I. And I'll be on the east coast this weekend...
I live in L.A. and have a full time job. Maybe if someone paid all of my expenses and was able to convince my boss to give me some extra paid vacation days to take the time off I would consider going. But even then, I can think of many other places I'd rather visit than Baltimore for a coin show. If i ever make a coin show trip it would probably be Florida, Chicago, Seattle first and probably some others I'm forgetting.
It's a long drive for me, 10 hours but I've been there in the past and it's a great show. The crab cakes you can get at nearby restaurants make it almost worth the trip.
* Distance (I am on the left coast) and expenses * Why? It would be great to see more coins but what I have found is that at the large shows, prices are jacked up more (or, if not jacked up, the dealers that bring them want more). Larger shows mean more people. More people means more opportunity to sell at a higher retail price.
The only reasons I would attend, given the reasons above, are: * See more coins (more dealers attend and bring more coins) and maybe fill in a few holes I have in our coin needs * Person aspect - see other collectors/dealers I know from online or have met before
besides, after reading stinkinlincoln's post, before it poofed, doesn't look like people should want to go to baltimore anyway
It's only a two-hour drive for me but no matter how carefully I plan I always get jammed with a crash project that stops me from going. I made it to the Milwaukee ANA a few years back and couldn't make it to Baltimore.
And the place is crawling with #%%$% Baltimorons and worse...Steeler Fans!!!

Baltimore in the winter?? No way for this Las Vegan! Late Spring or Fall but not winter or summer. I'd want to stay and see a few sights if I'm to travel that far.
Oh, and wife does not fly and therefore I'd have to drive!!

wow alot of forum members dont attend because its too far for them.Living in new york I could say the same for shows in fla and calif. But if I could I would go to those shows.Retired now so maybe I will.
My own experience with baltimore is this:wanted to go to it 2 years ago.It was about march 27th to march 30th I think.Had to work friday so mrs mike and I left early saturday morning.Just a couple of hours drive. We hit in to non moving traffic annoying but still ok.We got to the hilton about 1:30 or 2pm.checked in and due to both of us having mobility issues we didnt get to the convention center until about 3:30 or so.While my wife registered us I poked my head in the door and saw mostly empty tables.Maybe a dozen or so with coins and some of them closing up.I got very angry and told my wife we arent going in.Threw away the badges or whatever and was not pleasant for at least two hours. Eventually we did have a good time at the inner harbor saturday and sunday but I haent even thought of going to a show un til last years dollar show but then I got sick and didnt go.
Top ten reasons telephoto's not going to Baltimore:
1) 15 hour drive easily. 2) 6 day a week schedule here. 3) Unimpressive reports about the show. 4) Big venue + higher prices=fewer buys. 5) If I want to overpay all I need to do is pick up a phone. 6) Better opportunities closer to home. 7) Don't really care to fly or drive w/pricey coins to or from. 8) Cruddy weather out East 9) Horrendous traffic. 10) Haven't seen too many "great deals at B-more" threads.
I was raking leaves and pine straw in my yard. Nice weekend that was not too cold and not windy and no rain. A nice change from what had been the past couple of months.
I couldn't afford it. I have two big trips, including to the largest convention for another hobby of mine in the world, within a month, starting later this month. That means, no doing anything else until at least May...
Edit: Not to mention the drive. It would have been probably around 10 hours. My back can't take that kind of car riding for something like a coin show, when there are closer shows I could go to that would be significantly less painfull. That is the key reason I stopped my annual trips to Toledo, my bad back couldn't take it anymore (Just after I discovered a cool coin shop out there, no less)

I guess I'd have to agree with this. Some people don't live close enough to just go to Baltimore.
As far as going in the future. It would need to match up with a trip to the east coast.
