Barber Half 1901 "Blob S" variety?

A recent $28 pick up, cheap for a sharp VG. Anyway I spotted it, name it after me. Probably worth at least a $5 premium!

While I respect and value the experience and expertise of the poster, I cannot see where the extra mass of material originated from a hit within the footprint of the S. A hit is apparent between the F and D. How are they similar?

I believe Fred is correct in his assessment. I don't see a blob. I do see a hit, however.
