After today only 6 holes left to fill in the AU Mercury Dime Set. Picture Inside.

Of course the 6 holes are big ones, 16D, 21P, 21D, 25S, 26S and a better 27S, but this 31D was just as hard to find and it took over 2 years of looking for the right coin at the right price. Picked off ebay last weekend.

The rest of the holes have been filled except the overdates which I will not go after anyway. This is a older picture. Maybe this thing will be completed before I kick the bucket.

I, personally, like a variety of appearance to a set. I guess it's because I think of the coins as learning tools, among other things. Too much white, too much tone, you can keep it.

Tom for sure and I know that you know that. I have started AU sets 4 times in the last 28 years and this is the only one I have not given up on. This time I said to myself, " Just have some Patience". Five years worth and counting.
"Congrats Ken. I think the dates you have left are just as tough in an unc set."
Tony I could pluck the 27S off Ebay tonight if I was doing a Mint State set. I have not seen a true AU 27S in ages.
Thanks to the rest of you for the comments. If you want a challenge try this set sometime. Its slow but a nice rush when you find the right coin for certain slots. According to Lange quite a few of the early Mercs in AU are R6 if I remember correctly. Maybe I will try to find my book and check again.

<< <i>Very interesting - an elderly dealer at the Lakeland show last month told me the 31D is underrated in AU, and I should buy decent ones when I see them.....I had no idea they would be that tough. >>
They are a dime a dozen....

<< <i>You can always buy BU ones and put them in your pocket with your change for a day or two.
Just can't do that with a 700 buck coin.....

<< <i>Very nice, is that a capital holder? Were did you get it? >>
Yes it is. I have had this one since the 1980's. I think you can still buy them. Do a search for Capital and you should come up with something.

Of course, if you stick an ag 16-D in that set, someone's going to cry.

Its XF/AU or strick AU or nothing. Sticking a AG coin in the set would be worse than nothing in my opinion.

That is one heck of a nice set, i'll take it off your hands when you finish'er up.

Of course, you knew that. Just making small talk!
Beautiful collection.

If you buy a certified 16D to crack for the set, would that be wise?
