Poll: Dan Holmes Cents - messed-with?

Messed with?

Not messed with?

Tolerable amount of messing with?

Depends on the coin?

Comments

  • Depends on the coin. Grellman comments on that in his lot descriptions, but after having seen the the coins, my opinion would differ on some of them. It's important to note the Provenance and census information (Noyes Numbers) provided and research lot decriptions and photos in previous sales. There's some good information and sometimes differing opinions to be had. That said, The Dan Holmes collector contains some ofthe most wonderful cents available to collectors.

Almost certainly some have been messed with, and I chose "depends on the coin".

  • I'm on the line between "tolerably messed with" and "depends on the coin." I'm starting to think that most valuable coins have been tinkered with in some way over the years, and I'm sure I can't identify it all the time. I wonder if Dan did his own tinkering, or if he bought his coins from people prone to tinkering, or whether so few untinkered large cents exist (in and out of PCGS slabs) that I'm being too sensitive about this issue?

What do you guys think of the PCGS MS67 1802 S-234, particularly that spot behind Liberty's hair?
