Library of Coins Half Dime Album 1829-1873, Updated 8/30 added 1835

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've been meaning to make a post with the coins in the album so far but procrastination has been getting the best of me. Since I had a couple requests to do it I figured there's no time better than the present. So the album is a Library of Coins album (Vol. 40) and it's got holes from 1794 to 1873. I have no plans on ever filling any of the holes prior to 1829. This particular album was made around 1961 so thankfully there is no hole for the 1870S. By skipping the early bust and not having to worry about the 70S I should be able to fill all existing holes from 29-73. I only have 10 of the 90 holes filled so I'm very far from completion. I'm in no hurry though. Hell it's taken me a couple years just to get to 10, haha. Some of the coins are crack outs (PCGS & NGC) and some were bought raw. They've come from various sources (eBay, dealers, forum members, coin shows). One of the coins is from the Reiver collection. I'll try to repost to this thread when I get new coins for the album. They're not super high grade or gorgeously colored or super rare but they are what they are; honest, old half dimes that did the job they were meant to do and have retired to a happy home in their old age. Hope you all enjoy. As usual all comments, thoughts, opinions & musings are welcome.

I watched you "snap" a couple out of plastic and into that book on a youtube video! I think you have a great eye for pleasing coins.image

Very nice coins, and well matched. I like the '39-O in particular, with the impressive die crack.

Will be nice to see the set progress.

I love the look of all of these and they are very well matched in terms of grade

Keep it up and I'm looking forward to more.

for some reason, this type of collecting, is the pinnacle of a mature
    collector to me.

nice half dimes, circulated condition, some crust and toning (some
have more, some have less), in prices mere mortals can afford, very
old coins, pleasant classic designs, etc...

not out to impress the wine/cigar/cheese crowd and not out to compete
with anyone... impressive to anyone who has an inkling for US history
    or enjoys antiques...

an all around excellent collection and post.

The design change in the wreaths (see the '61 and '67) was a superior aesthetic move. Those are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing them.

    32-37 are my favorites.

fc you have a discerning eye. The '32 is my favorite as well. It's the Reiver coin and it's an 1832 LM11.2 die marriage. With an R5 (31-75 known to exist) rarity rating it's easily the rarest coin in the album so far.

which one was it you dropped after just cracking it out of a slab?
btw, that a neat how-to-crack-a-slab video i remember.

I've thought about collecting a circulated set of these coins, but have never gotten around to it. I do collect the pieces that you don't collect, the early ones from 1792 to 1805. I have all of the Red Book varieites except the 1802. Oddly enough the Liberty of Coins people didn't put a slot in the album for that one.

I have that Library of Coins half dime album, and sadly enough, I'm the original owner. I bought it at Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia in the early 1960s.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Bill, when I'm done we should make a combined post of your early bust and my capped bust/seated for a complete album image

Those nice crusty coins look like they've been in the album since the 60's - nice set so far!

A nice beginning to a nice set. I'm still looking for an 1802 and an 1846, among others, that fit my collection.

Put another coin in the album today. It's an 1853 No Arrows Half Dime. Pics are below of the coin sitting in it's new home and the remnants of it's old home.

Did creating this post for us on Monday reinvigorate your motivation of this collection or was the '53 NA already in the works of being purchased?

    BTW - Nice addition imageimage
  • CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm not entirely sure what reinvigorated me. The result of it though was finding this 53NA and making the post. I think the first new half dime, post reinvigoration, was the 1867S. image

Latest addition of this 1857O. It's a bit lower grade than some of the other coins but it's still got "the look". What made me get the coin was the fun die crack on the reverse.
