i would like to think that the coin belongs in a genuine holder
and the market should agree on the net grade and how to price it.

anything less is watering down the name brand of PCGS and their normal slabs.

Probably not, although PCGS can be a bit more forgiving on these. I would go through all of the Heritage auction archives and look at all of the PCGS graded 1795's and see if there are any similar specimens...

Honestly, normally the marks on the rev would kill it for me, but I like it and think it will slab.


Its a half from the 1700's that spent time in commerce. I think its earned a spot in a slab, dont you?

This is likely the case today. Before the genuine deal, I would think flip a coin, heads you get a net grade, tails you get a hard a$$ that would BB it.

The reverse side scratches are too numerous, too deep, and in a main focal area. That coin is nice, but theres a reason its currently in a slab such as PCI.

If I were buying coins for say a Dansco album, that would be a great candidate. Or if it were an ultra rare variety and you were trying to get all the Overtons from 1795, well its a no-brainer.

I think that they would put in a "genuine" holder because it is scratched. There appear to be some new scratches on the obverse, which is really unforgivable, and some old and news ones on both sides. These are NOT adjustment marks. This early dollar has adjustment marks.

I'll upgrade it eventually. I purchased it for a very good price considering the details. Will give it a shot crossing to PCGS.

So I sent it in to Pcgs as a crossover.

It came back Altered Surfaces. :-(

Would that be due to a cleaning or the reverse scratches?

Scratched, yeah, I could understand that. But I wonder what they meant by "altered surfaces".

Eh, well, it's a "genuine" holder either way. I would not have expected it to grade in any event.

BUT, I really like the CircCam contrast on it, and find it very appealing despite the minor issues. I like it a lot.

Doesn't altered surfaces, also include graffity? Maybe they thought the reverse was graffity.

Dude! I just spent an hour in my local B&M and saw no fewer than three super obviously cleaned rarities in holders that read things like VF30, XF40, and MS61. The XF40 was an 1870-CC half, and the MS61 was a 1808/7 half eagle. Cool coins, but they really shouldn't have been in holders that read anything but "Genuine".
