I got boxed out of coins for horseshoes last night

I was in the middle of putting mint state Roosies in flips when the call came. "hey Joe, get yer butt up to the fieldhouse, we're throwin' shoes". Now if you've ever tossed horse shoes, you understand how exciting this sport is.

The age bracket ranged from 24 yr olds to 58 yr olds and no matter how hard we threw, nobody could work up a sweat, even as they kept a beer in their other hand, which I happened to find amazingly athletic, save for a few drops spilled, which nearly led to a brawl. Definitely more fun than stapling a 2x2 cardboard flip shut. I had my coffee mug and I got ribbed for that, too

So it's double elimination and my my partner Dicky gave up because his hand hurt after our first defeat. I had to go with plan B: Tyrone. Talk about a non horse-shoe throwin' guy. I asked Tyrone where he was from and how old he was.

He said " 58 - Brooklyn, born an' raised ". I knew we were in trouble. Guess who was the first eliminated last night ?
In the aftermath , I asked my partner what it was like losing to Buster Douglas in 10.
He said, "That's part of life... losin'".


I told him coins aren't as exciting, but I can relate. I have roosies

My grandfather and his geezer friends threw horseshoes when I was a small boy. I haven't seen it played since.

He was a very powerfully built man and the horseshoes made an impressive sound when he hit the stake with them.

I used to watch my dad and his bar buddies throw shoes behind the local bar every summer. My brother and I would sit on a 50 gallon propane tank about 10 feet from the pit.

Sounds like it would be eminently possible to balance a cigarette on your lower lip, hold the beer in your left hand and still toss a ringer.

Throwing shoes is fun! I have a set in my camper and break it out quite a bit...still not very good at it though
