Score! - 2009 Lincoln Birthplace & Harrison $1's... from the Bank!

MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 34,358 ✭✭✭✭✭
yup.

after insisting they couldn't get them, I talked the lead teller into putting in a special request for unmixed rolls.

none have the P or D label on the outside. I can only assume they are "P" since I am on the east coast.

gimme me some time to scare up the pages/urls and I'll list the info used to help convince the teller to at least ask.

Unfortunately, the teller indicated the method I provided could not be used since their "operating procedures" require them to go through the coin services unit of an armored car company. But, it was enough to convince them to try and ask.

with success!

and, boy, are my arms tired.

I'm going to edit in the urls here:

    Mint web site

<< <i>Q. How can my bank, credit union, or thrift institution order Presidential $1 Coins?
The Federal Reserve Banks have established a special ordering process for the Presidential $1 Coins. Unmixed coins will be available to banks, credit unions, and thrift institutions for six weeks, beginning two weeks prior to a coin’s release date and continuing for four weeks after the release date. Your financial institution can read about the process in the February 1, 2007 issue of FedFlash, which is available on www.frbservices.org. >>

obviously, the next is at the FRB:
    New Coin Release Information

<< <i>Congress authorizes circulating coins that celebrate and honor American people, places, events and institutions. The Federal Reserve Banks provide ordering availability and distribution information for each coin release that is introduced by the U.S. Mint. Please review the schedule for each new release to help your institution plan your orders to meet public demand for these popular coin designs. >>

you can even provide them with a Fed Reserve contact. Just put in the ABA number from the lower left of your checks:
FRB contact look-up. Contact is "FedCash Services"

    << <i>Coin
Each Federal Reserve District maintains coin depositing and ordering operations to accept deposits of excess coin and process coin orders. The Federal Reserve Banks act as a distribution center for new coins developed by the United States Mint (Off-site Link). To best meet public demand for new coin releases, the Federal Reserve Banks have established an ordering process to make distribution easy and efficient. >>

<< <i>Depository institution coin deposits are weighed by electronic scales that are located at Federal Reserve Offices and also at armored carrier facilities throughout the United States. Many cash offices throughout the Federal Reserve System have entered into legal agreements with local armored carrier transportation companies to serve as off-site coin terminal facilities to process institution's deposits and maintain inventories of verified coin. >>

My understanding is they can order the $1 as 'special', but the quarter and the penny cannot be ordered that way.

read the top of the FRB Schedules.

there is a special ordering period for the $1, and just release dates for the cents and quarters.

    happy selling those tellers...

promise them they'll not see the coins returned, and unload them somewhere else if you don't want them.

anyway, I wonder how big of a deal it is for them to return coin to the FRB. it would seem they may be doing it already with people's change jars.

Its a bit more complicated than that, I had to go alll the way to the head vault teller at the main branch, who then had to go to corporate, and then all I got was a hmmmmm. And this is witha big bank that already does the Presidential dollars.

I don't think its such a big a deal as much as the costs associated with the returns since they deal with a third party vendor. Namely, the Armored Car Service or the folks that roll and box the coins.

I'm gonna save this thread for future reference even though the banks in my area are "set in their way" and will simply not budge one inch!

Thanks for all the footwork and why are your arms tired?? image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Let us know if you find anything interesting in the Harrison $1's.
I asked at my bank last week and the teller had a brand new unopened box
at her station. I only got a couple rolls but if you find something good
I'll go back and get the rest image

So far, I didn't notice anything unusual, but I did think the quality on the
Harrison's was actually quite good over previous issues. These were
Philly mint by the way. I might take a closer look at them and pick the 3 best
and take a stab at a submission.

carried 4 boxes of cents in one trip.

mine was saying it couldn't be done.

just ask them to make a special request for new stuff and see what they get. that's what mine did.

the rapport between the bank and the armored car co is falling apart.

the armored car company is telling them "they can't get them now" and "this is what the feds are giving them" and more BS.

I've made sure to point out the release dates and special ordering periods... and they get push back.

the armored car companies have coin vaults and I suspect they are wishing to empty them as much as the banks are wishing to empty their filling vaults.

one might say this is a sign of losing rapport with my branch, and it may be... however I'm trying at other branches and am hearing the same stories.

    here is more info:

it's selling the tellers on the idea that they can call and make a special request without guarantees.

and the tellers need to be aware of the release dates and ordering periods. The Fed Reserve banks specifically make these coins available arond release dates and ordering periods. It is on their web site. Sell the tellers on selling the armored car companies.

    other factoids:
apparently the banks don't generally order from the Fed Res.
They order from armored car co.'s
They have been doing it electronically.
so, for them to call someone generally gives them the deer in headlights effect. "we don't do that" "we don't know who to call" -> 'call the armored car co.' -> "but we don't know who to call."

Sell them on the idea that you know others have done the same thing and it works.

There are people they can call in these co's to request new coin without promises.

It also helps to call the armored car companies and find out who Bank X needs to call for the request and have the number ready to give out. Have the Fed. Reserve number ready to give out (see contact look up page using ABA number from your checks. on the contacts list it is the "Fedcash telephone number)

just let them know you understand there are no promises and ask if they can keep trying.

You probably aren't the only one asking. Especially for the cents, they'll be heroes if they can get some for people.
