Two questions for the sellers of coins.....

How have sales been over the past year and

how have prices been (lower, stable or higher) for classic US graded coinage in grades 64 through 68?

    Adrian,

You need to come back to Texas, and get involved. Lots of things have changed since you left town.

Early copper has done very well, and has not seen the 20% dip experienced by almost every other series.

Gold is as hot as it has ever been. There is historic demand for generic 1 oz( LIBS, Saints, AM eagle, Buffalos, and now UHR's) and the premiums show it.

Special coins still get attention, but any mid-grade non-rarity will sit in a dealer's case, or fail to make even a low reserve at auction.

Dealers even have 1796 quarters, 1796 and 97 halves, MS early dollars that are just idling, like a stalled car on a lonely street. If the coin is not necessary to a set, or priced even close to 2008 levels, no one is interested.

Generic CBH's that were bringing between $4500 to $4900 in 2008 might bring 3800 today. Early dollars in AU 55 are priced below 10,000, and down to 7500.

But, high end seated quarters and halves did well in 2008, as did DMPL Morgans.

Commems are still dead, as are lib and shield nickels.

The Barber halves I sold at FUN 2009 did poorly in MS 65, (and also some in 66), but the 67's made some new highs.

Sunnywood sold his No. 1 set of Barber quarters in July, 2008 for a great price( to one collector), but auction sales of this denomination has been disapppointing since that time.

Looking at Dealer web sites, and the time the coins have been for sale, I would opine that sales are sluggish. Even for some of the very nice Seated proofs in 65 or better.

Some of the bigger players(not all) have trimmed back their buys, due to large losses in the equity markets.

Maybe next year, with gold solidly over 1100/oz, things will be better.
