A Big Thank You To The People Who Put This Book Online

I would like to say Thank You to the people involved with putting Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins online.
It is a great piece of literary work that is full of information. And will help further peoples knowledge in the field of Numismatics. I hope more out of print coin books can make it online to help people with the study of a subject that has brought me so much joy in my life.

I find it very odd that there's no hint of anyone taking credit for putting the site up -- no "contact us" or "about us" links, or anything else of that sort.

It appears that the original book was copyrighted by F.C.I. Press. I'd be a whole lot happier about using this site if I knew it was produced with their permission...

The domain name is registered to someone on Grand Cayman Island. It sounds a bit fishy to me...

I goth this from running whois on the domain name:

I'm guessing it's not legit. Don't get used to it being there.
  • Wow Sorry guys I never even thought about it not being legit. I was doing a quick yahoo search to see if any book stores had a copy at a
decent price before bed and it came up somewhere around the sixth position on the search. Figured everything was on the up and up.
    Again Sorry

    As would I.
That said, after rooting around for a while I have come to the conclusion that I need to buy this volume.
I continue to and probably always will get maximum enjoyment from reading when I am away from my monitor.

The text is not a reproduction of the actual pages but rather an OCR generated text
that has not been carefully checked. The word

    Boulton’s ... became ... !Mutton's

for example. The photographs were lifted from the book, however, and pasted onto
    the reproduced pages.

The fact that the website is registered outside the U.S. does not inspire confidence in
the legality of the posting. The book was copyrighted in 1988 and it is difficult to believe
that the copyright holder would willingly surrender this right for free usage over the
    internet.

I seem to recall that Breen was sued by at least one of the people he abused. I also recall that after his death his estate remained tied up in litigation, which was still going on when his wife died. I would be surprised if anyone was able to get permission to reproduce it any manner.

The Whois data for the website is just a privacy screen. That doesn't necessarily mean the owner of the site is based out of the Caymans. It's a common practice nowadays for domain registrars to offer privacy like this where they list their own data and forward the owner any correspondence. Cuts down on spam for webmasters, but reduces transparency for users.

There is a "Contact Us" link at the top of the home page.

There is also an ad for "US Rare Coin Investments" out of Florida. Perhaps they know something about the encyclopedia being online.

FCI Press seems to retain copyright. I did not find an assignment in the Copyright Office.

There are two links at this website, one for rare coins, the other for books. Both have the same
toll-free number at Port Charlotte, Florida.
