What prompts you to buy or sell a coin ?

Feel free to explain.
I have a few things that trigger my buying and selling modes, but I'm just curious how others are driven.

I buy when a better coin than my set piece becomes available. Don't care if it is lower in numerical grade, all that matters to me is being problem-free and more eye appealing
  • Lately I have been promted to buy a coin when I thought it was a good deal (a NGC ER MS 69 2008 W ASE reverse of 2007 from MCM For $125 shipped). I sold it when I felt the coin may spot and I was worried it could lose its value at $525.00. I thought it was a good deal again in PCGS First Strike 69 for 420 bucks, so I bought another one. Then I worried about spots again when I realized I could get $600.00 out of it with a little help from Microsofts cash back program and sold again.

This is the story of one coin and may not reflect what makes me buy or sell other coins.

rarity. i want a rare coin. i cannot stand widgets. - buy

sell - i get tired of a coin because it has a problem i dislike or i grow
into more of a niche area. i want quality (rarity) over quantity (widgets).
  • When I see a coin I really like in my "new" series, it prompts me to sell some coins in my "old" series.

Buy: it is an interesting and good looking coin, and I have enough money for it. image

Sell: I feel the prices will drop soon and not recover. A good example is the MS65 FBL Franklins when the pops started rising quickly.

Buy: I want it and have enough extra cash to pay for it.

    Sell: I died.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

When I need money because I found something else I want to buy.
So I try to sell of my least favorite low price coins to make $$$. Usually my least favorite stuff is everybody else's least favorite stuff too and I have to end up selling some better stuff & keeping the junk.
So as a result my collection consists of really really undesirable stuff and really really nice stuff, not much midrange.

I have 2 groups of coins. 1st group is my long term collection. When a coin i need comes along i buy it, if a nicer coin comes along i buy that also. If another coin comes along that is priced right i buy it also.

So now i have multiplies and those get sold when i need cash, or something comes along... My 2nd collection of coins is always for sell if the price is right. I just bought those to look, see and study.

    1. Upgraded a coin.

    2. Made an improvement with-in the same grade.

    3. Need for money to buy a "bigger" coin.

I used to hang on to exceptional coins even after upgrading a particular date/mm. That, however, became expensive and I try not to hold duplicate.

I sell a common coin when I no longer like it. It makes no difference whether or not I need it for my set. Rarer coins I tend to hoard.

I buy anything I like if the price is right. If it is a dup, I tend to pay a little less than for one I need for my set. I enjoy lots of dups for REDBOOK varieties I especially like.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I'm usually prompted to sell when I look around at all the crap I've accumulated and then wonder why I have it all!

Once I sell it all, I get money and then I start buying it all back again!

and so the cycle continues on......... image

Rarely do I sell with a specific intent that doesn't get side tracked by some other good looking coin.

I buy cuz there is a greedy possessive little voice inside of me that says I just gotta have it, even tho I could probably live very well without it. I WANT it but I really don't NEED it and there is a certain measure of smug satisfaction in having something that someone else wants. I sell cuz sometimes the "you need money" voice yells out too.

It's very simple. I buy a coin if I like it and sell it if I no longer appreciate it.

    I sell:

    1. When the values for a series I have duplicates in are in an upward trend, or
    2. I upgraded a particular coin and therefore sell the lower grade one to recoup some of what I paid for the upgrade.
I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

a coin that has a future to it stirs my trigger finger

some coins are replaceable whereas some are not

i sold my 14 pr64r/b matty in name of getting the 65-67 sms ms66dcam jeffersons

i'll see more 14 mattys offered then a 65 or 66 sms dcam jefferson any year as these are everyday coins

it's great when i don't have to sell one quick as something rare popped up
everything in life is but merely on loan to us by our appreciation....lose your appreciation and see
