Just curious-- what went on during the PCGS site maintenance over the weekend?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I tried to log into the boards on Saturday afternoon, and I got a message that they were down for maintenance until 4 AM on Sunday. I am just curious what sort of maintenance happens during these outages. I don't see anything different about the boards today. Maybe one of the computer gurus (fc?) can enlighten us, because I was really missing the boards during the time they were down.

I think they hired Consuela to clean up and she unplugged the system.

The FBI was brought in to look thru all of Longacre's questions, to see if there was a hidden message.

Perhaps they fixed the glitch that was keeping me and others from sending PMs, editing messages, and posting while logged on. Knock on wood but no errors this morning. --Jerry

I believe during these maintenance windows there is a program run that will randomly copy and or delete every 4th file, avatar, PM and stored jpg file on the server.

Then when someone complains, the admin will state that "everything else looks fine, must be a problem on your side!".image

Do any of you guys take the time to defrag your drives or degauss your monitor or back-up your system or run spyware? image

The outage was a rough period of time. I wandered aimlessly throughout the house as if I were shell shocked. I think I finally sat down and watched something on the dvr but I'm not sure since I'm trying to block this horrible event. image

I believe holeinone might be on to something...

Seems that Homeland Security does not like it when folks ask too many questions and they were probably doing an "in-depth" AUDIT image of Longacre's posts...

You guys are way too paranoid. Us IT types know that they were just doing backups, hardware config changes, software updates, that sort of thing. Of course all these things are necessary to track Longacre's keystrokes to the NSA specification, but that is just a coincidence image

Yup, I do all those things, but they all run on schedules that I've created (minus degaussing the monitor of course).

I think the temporary page that came up on pcgs.com said something to the effect of "Get ready for the new and improved PCGS.com!" didn't it?

    what is degaussing a monitor?

And can it be done on a laptop?

I have no clue what you are talking about.

  • Basically the outage was for this:

Due to scheduled maintenance required by the building owner, we will be without power from approximately 5pm until midnight (Pacific time) this Satuday. During this time ALL systems including websites, etc) will be unavailable.

  • It was just a test to see who could be brought back into a normal routine of life --- you know things like spending time with that female ( or male ) that you see around the house, doing honey do list's, finding out that TV is in color now and there is more then 4 channels, and finding out that those young one's running around the house call you daddy ( or mommy ) for a reason.

Thanks PCGS for working to making this happen.

My wife was working and my son was next door at a friend's house so I was actually quite bored. Luckily I had a couple episodes of House and The Unit recorded on the dvr.

Not good timing to have the website down and then Google PCGS to find that the CEO had just been forced to sell his stock in the parent company.

Not so ... the CEO of CU had to sell stock to meet a margin call...PCGS's "chief's" were not involved.....

“The recent turmoil in the financial markets — combined with an inability of Collectors Universe’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Haynes to quickly access assets — triggered the need to sell Collectors Universe stock related to collateralized loans of Mr. Haynes,” said the company in a statement released late Thursday. A collateralized loan is one secured by stock or property. If the collateral goes down beyond a certain value, it often prompts a margin call requiring the borrower to put up additional money."

Why did frank edit his post? I thought he said the PCGS CEO sold a controlling interest in the company. Which one is it?

My guess is that "site maintenance" was preceeded by a standard question, much like "I wonder what this button does". Then was followed by a "Hurry up and put up the 'site maintenance html document' while we sort all this out". image
