Photography vs. USB Microscope

I own a Canon SD750 camera, which has a digital macro function on it, and I have snapped a few shots with it. I got so-so results, but I'm sure that had more to do with my hambone technique than the camera it’s self. I'm wondering if my little digital can get the job done without laying out a chunk of cash or will I be better off investing in one of the USB Digital Microscopes. I played around with one of the Dino-lite microscopes at the Atlanta show and it was very impressive from what i saw. I don't envision needing to take super high quality photographs, so with that said I'd like to get some opinions.

I use the Canon SD450 and I get fairly good pics with it.

I've done very well with the Dino-Lite USB microscope taking photos for Ebay. Do not get the stand that has the flexible neck to it. I did. They have a solid stand that you get get the device higher up to take photos of the entire slab. If I want to take photos of the entire slab, I need to place 2 PCGS storage boxes under the flexible neck stand.

I think you can find a way to do good with the digital camera. I just havent many sharp images from the USB cameras.

If you want to take pics of whole coins/slab, a digicam will probably do better than a microscope with a little practice.

I handhold my Canon A80 to the eyepiece of a normal stereoscope and the results are typically better than what I've seen from USB microscopes. Also, when I'm not taking pictures through it, I can still use the stereoscope as a stereoscope. For this reason, I'd recommend buying a stereoscope instead. You can get a decent inexpensive 10+30x scope at many coin shows. Just make sure you try the one you buy.

If you're looking for close ups of doubled/repunched mint marks or VAM diagnostics, that is what the digital microscope is for. I did some shopping and bought one a couple years back. The best price I found for the dinolite was $368 delivered with stand from Mowhawk medical mall online. --Jerry

Setting the timer to 2 seconds and holding my breath usually helps

I bought a Tasco microscope at Academy for $69 dollars. (kids microscope) Works good, just wish I could adjust the light.
