How much can I expect to pay for a First Spouse gold coin at a local brick & mortar shop?
I was debating whether I should even post this thread, out of fear that someone will accuse me of collecting damn Moderns.
Anyway, The Man will be traveling the week after next, and I might have the opportunity to actually be unchained from my desk for 60 minutes during lunch and visit a local B&M store about a mile or two away. I find some of the First Spouse designs to be attractive, and I might want to buy one.
In your opinion, which is the best First Spouse coin to purchase, or are they all the same? Also, what sort of price should I expect to pay? I don't know if I should be writing this here, but should I just buy a raw coin, rather than a slabbed one?

<< <i>Of the ones minted so far, go for the smallest mintage, I think I remember reading on here one of them had under 4000 minted ( I think the last one, but not 100% sure). I don't follow this series, but I am sure FL Buff Hunter could give you an idea. >>
The first three all hit max, 20,000 each proof/unc
Dolley Madison 11,160 unc / 17,513 proof
Elizabeth Monroe 3,910 unc / 6,666 proof

I have 3 of the liberty spouses (TJ) that I still haven't sold because locally they will pay what they pay for melt. Haven't bothered trying elsewhere (they are PCGS MS/PR69...if they were 70, then they would have still been close to melt locally).
If you want it for "investment", get the lowest mintage at the lowest price.
If you want it for the design, which is why I am ok holding onto the ones I have, since I like the design, then get the one that appeals to you (was the TJ Liberty one for me)
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
So.... Aim for a point or 2 above melt

It's a close call but I'd also pick the Jefferson proof. The business strike just does nothing for me.
Yes shipping is extra but probably about the same as sales tax.
Thomas Jefferson's Liberty. That's the best lookin' one in my opinion.
You can get 'em for melt. Just keep looking.

Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
If you just want to collect the Liberty Spouse sub-set, I suggest buying a slabbed PCGS First StrikeSM 70 off eBay. Since the Jefferson's Liberty has the highest First StrikeSM graded population of any of the spouses issued so far, the premium for a PCGS First StrikeSM PR70 is much less (~$800) at this point than the other spouses especially the 2008 issues which have the lowest sales totals and graded population. The PCGS MS70 coins also have a much lower premium than the PR70's since the 70 grade-thru percentage is alot higher for the Uncirculated coins than the Proofs.

Moderns? MODERNS?!?!
OMG...what is this world coming to???
Longacre collecting Moderns!?!?
This is totally unacceptable!!!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

<< <i>get the jefferson liberty, it is a classic design >>
Agreed. It's the only one I have and it's a beauty. No reason to get any of these coins (yet) unless you really love the design.
