How unusual is it to come across a heavily circulated 20 cent piece?

I've always been under the impression that the 20 cent coin was universally disliked and did not circulate much as a result. I stumbled across an example today that would probably grade Fair-02 if certified, I'm wondering if that could be considered a condition scarcity and if it would be worth picking up for a low-ball set collector.

    Check the pops?

You can always wear it down some more and turn it into a PO-1 which would get much more interest.

Pops are in no way representative of the average grade of a series. The coins received heavy circulation, with many

  • I agree with Gemini, usually the 20c pieces that come over the counter are AG-VG, usually cleaned or has other problems.

    If it's a '76-CC, very unusual.

Like others have said most 20 cent pieces are pretty well worn, Fine or lower I'd say. That's why unc pieces, even 1875-Ss, bring strong prices. A nice well struck XF/AU is a tough coin to find as well.

The coin is probably a little scarce in AG-3, but it's not all that hard to find an 1875-S or even an 1875-CC in Good. Coins in those grades are not worth certifying so the population reports make them look scarcer than they are.
