Do you ever look at a listing of modern commemoratives and say, "I forgot about that one; it's

I have been reading through the latest QDB Redbook on Commemoratives. After carefully taking a sharp blade and removing the Foreword pages image, I am continuing to read the book. Like with any other book, I am starting at the beginning. However, being the curious numismatist, I flipped through the book and looked at the <gasp> modern commemorative section.

As I was flipping the pages, several times I said to myself, "hey, I forgot about that modern commem. That design isn't half bad. And the fact that you can get these for a song makes it even better." Has anyone else had this reaction to the modern commemoratives? In particular, I think the following are pretty nice designs that I completely forgot about: 1987 Constitutional Bicentennial, 1989 Congress Bicentennial, 1992 Christopher Columbus, 1992 White House, 1993 Bill of Rights, 1993 Thomas Jefferson, 1994 US Capitol, 1994 POW, 1996 Smithsonian, and a few others. What do you think?

I do believe that taking a sharp blade to the forward was a wise decision. After all, people ARE talking.image

Modern Commemoratives are underrated and that is perfectly fine with me:

I know what you mean. I am currently re-thinking my anti-Olympic coin stance and considering picking up the 1988 proof gold $5 after reading QDB's assesment of it. I recently picked up the Jefferson. I have the Columbus (all), the POW, and the Smithsonian (silver) issues. However, I just can't work up enough interest in the other ones you mention.

  • Excelllent topic, Longacre! As a matter of fact, I was kicking that around as I picked up a 1984-P Olympics Silver $, got it really cheap, and I gotta tell you, was thinking of putting it in my 'yeah, gonna sell this' silver pile. BUT, the reverse eagle on that coin, I just love it! Some of these eagles on the reverses of the commems, early (think Bridgeport) as well as moderns (think this Olympic one), just gorgeous!
  • I like some of them and have about (5) gold and (20) silver dollars with a few halfs, where I bought the set, in slabs. My favorite is the George Washington $5 gold because it is a Bela Pratt design that was never used. I like the Capital dollar and buy the ones that I like.

Spacemonkey has a complete $1 set for sale. I really wish I could afford it because I really overlooked many of them and they nice to look at as a set.

I like the 1982 George Washington half dollar. The modern commem program got off to a good start!

Whether modern or classic, commems are my favorite. I look at the redbook all the time in this fashion.

Since the stupid price of bullion ASE's, I've been picking up some interesting back dates in the series from $18.50 to $28. I like the look of many of these coins and they're interesting to collect. I think in due time the price of silver will ensure they will bring that much (for the higher priced ones) in just the bullion content and who knows when that happens they maybe melted as common dates, which they have much less mintage than the common coveted ASE's. My favorite is the George Washington $5 gold because it is a Bela Pratt design that was never used.

Wasn't that a Laura Gardin Fraser design that was never used?

Should have been the design on the Washington Quarter.

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

  • Oldtrader3, EXCELLENT call on the George Washington $5....wasnt that like 1999? That is a great image of George (though I never saw him in person, I can only go by portraits he's been in).....but that is a great looking coin!! Halfhunter is 100% right, that SHOULD be on our quarter....its a more appealing, just art deco enough to really be a cool, yet suitable/appropriate design for our most used coin (I am just assuming that, and I didnt/wont Google it or look it up, I would have to guess it is...but then again, I am used to being wrong alot, so....).

Have to say I agree also, even though I don't collect them I hav picked up a few just for the design. I especially like the Congress Dollar and 1/2 Dollar.
  • I have a couple for sale at the BST boards right now.image

If you guys received your latest March issue of the Rare Coin Market Report from PCGS. At the last page there is an article entitled "Hall,Guth Discuss Coin Grading at 2008 PCGS FUN Luncheon" ...AT the end of this article on the last paragraph it states and it quotes David Hall Co-founder of PCGS and i quote" Hall offered one recommendation on numismatic investing. "Silver commemoratives are undervalued in today's market," end quote.

Been working on a Dansco 7061 half album. All the commems are available, and for the most part decent looking. My favorite is the 95 Civil War Proof, my least favorite is with out a doubt the 01 Capitol Visitor.

That is the only modern commem set that I find attractive and the only one that I own.
