1933 Double Eagles

With all of the ones that have popped up over the 74 years since they were minted, what is the running total now for all those that escaped the Mint (including the ones destroyed by the Secret Service in times past)?

These are the ones I know:
- King Farouk example: 1
- Most recent examples: 10
- Smithsonian examples: ?

There are two in the SI. Total known is 13.

Didn't the Secret Service destroy several in the 1950's? I remember reading that somewhere.

Yes and the Treasury destroyed thousands more in the 1930's.

Actually, I suspect the coin identified as the King Farouk specimen is in fact not the actual King Farouk specimen and is thus still hiding out there. This is the sort of thing that happens when lawyers get involved in coin collecting.

Sorry about that, I guess a better question would be: how many escaped into private hands, even if only for a short while?

  • Read "Illegal Tender" by David Tripp. It is a wonderful book about the minting and removal of 1933 double eagles from the U.S. Mint.

All I know is I'm keeping mine a secret

    D'oh!
  • Other than the 13 known existing examples, it is theorized that their may possibly be nine others unaccounted for.

One of the parties involved made a statement at one point saying that 25 pieces had left the Mint, not counting the two at the Smithsonian. Nine of these were later destroyed by the government.

It is also possible that Treasury Secretary William Woodin had an additional group of five or ten, that were probably turned back in and destroyed.

I can absolutely guarantee you that there are more than 13 in existence.

There is no Julian collection of DE's.

That is not to say that none have ever passed thru............
