Doubling on this 84 Indian???

Anyone ever seen anything like this before? Note the doubling (or what ever you want to call it) around the letters but not the date.

What you are calling doubleing on the lettering is quite common, (Actually made by the punches the made the lettering) the reason you do not see the date the same way, is it was added with a differant punch.

As far as the added L, all 1884's have an L on them.

  • Near the end of 1864 the obverse was redesigned and included the designer's inital L.

So some of the 1864's did not have the L, but after 1864 they all should.

  • My bad. I was typing 84 and thinking 64 when I wrote this. Should have my coffee first. I have made the correction.
