A promotion is always a good reason for a celebratory coin (my husband seems to believe this as much as I believe that a new bike serves the same purpose for him).
You already did PG school; what duty did you scam them out of now?
By the way, have you added any good 1872's to your set recently? I made a run at a 1872-CC $20, but my money ran out before the other bidder's stopped!

Congratulations on the promotion! As for the importance of thes dates, The United States Naval Academy was established in 1845 and the other dates I'll guess were the years your family members graduated from it.
Thanks for all the kind words. I have been very blessed in where the military has sent me, so, up to rhis point it hasn't been a terrible sacrifice. I am sure that they will get their pound of flesh eventually but we are hopeful that this will be a great tour.
I have already finished NPS so we will not be going there. I am back at FNMOC(meteorology center).
I didn't expect anyone to get the dates...they were very tough although some got some.
1845 is the year the Academy was founded. Good get fc.
1857 was oof couse the central america, but the significance is really no more than any other shipwreck. The reason I put it on there is because there is a monument to the CO of the C.A. at the academy grounds...called Herndon monument. It is greased with lard each year for the 'plebes no more ceremony'
The other dates were harder...1898 is 100 years before I was commissioned. I left out 1900 which is 100 years before I made j.g. 1902 is 100 years before LT and now 2007 is 100 before LCDR.
BTW, 1845 is atough year numismatically. I have often thought about putting together a date set for that year...similar to my 1872 set. Finding unmessed and attractive coins in any grade is very difficult. I almost kept the 45-O that I sold to fc...biut decided I would have to spend thousands just to find a half dozen companions for it.
Bear..my computer is finally here but no internet yet...the auctions will get underway soon
Rob...no new additions to the 1872 set. In fact the set is in jeopardy since we might be selling the house to finance a house in Pacific Grove.
Cathy...I pinned on yesterday. I was senior on the promotion list.
As far as does the Navy extend 'gifts' to those that are thinking of getting out. The answer is 'sometimes'
I am looking to buy a promotion coin. Someting lovely and seated would be nice. Anyone have anything they want to sell....RYK?
My understanding is that the newly graduated midshipman that makes it to the top of the monument first is supposed to be the first to make Admiral from that class... ??

Does that mean I have to salute you?? I new all those Greenberet stories would get to you.. How's the family doing.. Growing like a weed I suppose. Haven't heard from you in awhile.. Hope all is going well.. I hope the military is taking good care of our men in uniform... Tell the family hello and drop a line when you have time...
Congratulations. I come from a navy family. Some of the fondest memories I have of my childhood are the bases and that unique smell of a US naval vessell. jws
Ltcdrs need to either return salutes or salute everyone except other Ltcdrs. Here's a question. Who do O-10s (Generals and Admirals) have to salute? Ans: Medal of Honor recipients.
<< <i>Ah, but can you navigate a 3-masted past the Columbia River bar ??? >>
The Columbia bar should put fear in any captain. >>
My late Uncle was a commercial fisherman there for most of his life, and he would tell some great stories about his many harrowing adventures while coming in over the bar.
Does this mean you'll be purchasing more mint products ?
It's more than a job you have (all our military people). I salute an attitude of servitude. It's a heavy load giving up our "civilian" status and even more in these troubled times. Here's to the BRASS , because I can't resist Coin PUNS

They don't have to salute MoH winners....it's a traditional courtesy, but not a requirement.
John, CONGRATULATIONS on your promotion and assignment!! Wish you happy times, good health, and good fortune to you and your family. Will you continue to sell coins through your Highmoon web site? Cheers, Dave
... and back to Monterey to boot ... they must luv ya!
No clue on the dates, but here's a 98-s Barber ...
and a salute from an ex-Squid (which is , of course, the higher form of Marine life, just in case any of my semper fi buddies forgot)
... and the proud father of a current USN boot recruit, who started his adventure on Oct 2, 2007 ... and should be on his way to Charleston for the Nuclear EM school after Great Lakes

1898 USS Maine
1902 SS Elingamite
1907 ???
But this doesn't make sense as 1865 for the SS Republic should be there too.
Oh and congrats on the promotion!
