Ebayers vs. forum members( please read)

Over the past few months I've been buying coins and mints sets from here and ebay and I wanted to say I have had better luck and fewer problems when the seller is a member of these forums. There seems to be a higher level of integrity and sense of fair play here.
I just want to say a big THANK YOU.

I've never had a problem dealing with forum members. A "higher level of integrity" than eBayers is an understatement. Dealing with fellow forum members is like doing business with old friends. image

  • I agree 100%

Although I'm still new to the boards (but not the hobby!) and I've only had a couple of transactions, I wholeheartedly agree. Definitely seems to be serious numismatists overall here, buying and selling. Of course one drives the other. I think if some of the Ebay shysters started putting problem coins on here at high prices, they would get spotlighted and either run out quickly, or leave on their own, due to lack buyers. Maybe this has already happened in the past?

  • I have met quite a few people here and have also never had a problem here. I feel secure buying and selling with no pressure of having to fight a last min snipper. My Kennedy set would never have been completed with out this board.

Seeing how people are eaten alive on these boards if they fail to close the deal, should be enough incentive to do the right thing image

I prefer to deal with members here than on EBAY...plus its nice to save the usorious fees EBAY/Paypal charge.

OK I will be the dark horse on this. Most of the people here are great to deal with. But I have had the bad experience of having to get the cops and other members to help track down a dead beat that I bought coins from and did not deliver.
My advice is that all members use PayPal for payments until a report is developed with the other members. And do not be surprised if some of us only want to deal that way. The other thing is don't be surprised if some one asks for references. I would also caution that if a person does not have there profile filled out and PM enabled use caution in initial dealings.
Good luck to all in the pursuit of the hobby

I have both bought and sold on the BST and EVERYTHING seems to work great for both parties! The majority of coin collectors out there are good honest people. When buying I make sure the seller has been around here for awhile, and when selling I always make sure I send everything out insured!

I like buying, and selling, to people here....but, unlike some, I have had someone try to change the terms of agreement AFTER receiving the items (was more of a trade)....common coins.

Not the first time something like that with that person but I just chalk it up to someone I won't bother dealing with again and I move on.

Buying, trading, selling to forum member through the BST has always gone smooth, no problems.
I have found though, dealing with forum members on ebay, that has not always been the case. On 3 occasions within the last 2 month I've run across members who like to "Ebay describe" their listings, omitting things that IMO should have been pointed out. Yes I know buyer beware, buy the coin not the plastic....... blah, blah, blah, but I hold forum members to a higher standard then non-forum folks, and I do take notes...image

I agree, there is a high overall level of integrity with forum members (especially those who participate, and are not just here to hawk thier wares), but I also think that fear of a forum flaming is a significant deterrant to shady dealings as well.
