Welcome to the Forum. It's well known that 1963 wasn't a quality year at the Denver mint. Just last year there were only 28 ms66rd 1963D cents graded by PCGS. Now there are only 41 and there is no ms67 yet. These are much lower figures when compared to the other Memorials. I might add that there are a few ms66 examples that are not graded correctly IMO. I'VE seen 2 that looked ms64 to me.
So, many consider this date as the key to the series. The good ole supply and demand theory probably comes into play here. This coin is hard to make, it doesn't become available very often, and most Lincoln collectors need an ms66 example. Before the population shot up to 41, this date went for $900 on Ebay.
