Gilt coins with cameo devices...

Do the strong cameo devices on some gilt coins prove that they were struck on gilt planchets? (As opposed to being gold plated after being struck.)

Does anyone here know more about the process?

    Interesting question Andy.
I am pretty sure that the coin planchet are gilt plated then struck. The cameo effect is achieved from the dies being polished as opposed to the planchet being plated in a certain way. Also sometimes in British coins you come across coins which are described as being VIP proof. They are specially made where the certain parts of dies like the bust and lettering are sandblasted while the high part of the die (which once struck becomes the field of the coin) are polished. This gives a more cameo appearance.
