Camera images are sometimes all-revealing-how many surprises have you had?

GD these 58 year old eyes! (even with loupe)

They can be a blessing or a curse.

Two incidents recently upon image evaluation: one was a coin I thought would do well, the other I had dismissed following purchase. Sure enough, when I got into the micro-photography pre-auction mode my opinions reversed themselves. The "good" coin was disappointing, the "less appreciated" coin was golden and auction results bore out those initial impressions.

Things evened out in terms of receiving more for the one and less for the other. I even made a profit!image Not dramatically so, but...

How many times have you wished you could image a coin before you purchased it?

How many times will the "nicer in hand piece" image less well than the other and essentially reveal itself as a coin you should not have purchased, despite careful selection? I've been amazed at what certain images revealed that I never came close to seeing at time of purchase, both bad and good...

I've also had this happen. It's surprising how the smallest amount of verdigris on copper glows like a green beacon when imaged. image

Truer words have never been spoken. I hate imaging coins with any verdigris on them. They turn out to look totally infested.

There were a few times when I bought off eBay and the coin was "different". Both times I was pleasantly surprised, though. First one involved a die clash on a heavily toned coin, which could only be seen if the light hit it just right, and the other was die-polishing lines, which looked like scratches on sellers' images.

Wait, forgot about my last eBay purchase - 1815 Durango 8 Reales that had beautiful emerald-green with hints of orange and blue toning in-hand, which was not captured in sellers' images.

I've dodged the bullet so far, but it's probably because I expect the worst case scenario every time I buy coins sight-unseen...
