Anaconda Rare Coins - Baltimore Newps, Market Report, & PNG News!

March Baltimore 2007 Show and Market Report

Hello All,

I’ll try to make this one less of a monster in terms of filesize unlike the last one that was kind of too big and was rejected by some emails I sent it to. Boy did a lot of stuff happen this two weeks. Baltimore was a blast, Adrian and I were accepted into the PNG, and we’ve got some fantastic new custom hockey jerseys to give away. I suppose I can elaborate a bit on what’s happening with the current rare coin market as well because I seem to have some time on my hands after listing all of our new purchases (without descriptions, I’ll get to that later. The images are most important right?) because I’m looking down outside my window at the High-5 here at LBJ and 75 Central in Dallas and traffic is at a standstill. So, if I attempt to leave now, I’ll just be sitting in that mess in the pouring rain for an hour or so. I’d rather leave a couple hours from now and be on the road for less than 30 minutes to my place and that’ll give me ample time to construct a user friendly, fun to read guide to the current state of affairs in the numismatic community.

So, on to the first matter of business: PNG!

Adrian and I are now PNG members. Yup, it’s all business now. No more fun and games and wacky, off-kilter descriptions. Adrian is now officially PNG member #647 and I, Brandon Kelley am PNG member #A648. Yes, I’m an associate member because I thought the $300 Associate member fees sounded like a good discount rate for tightwads like myself. Wink wink. I’m actually just a POORGUY.

Anaconda Custom Hockey Jerseys:

Ok, this is kind of out there in left field, or wherever that is in a hockey rink, but I’ve designed and produced some custom hockey jerseys for Anaconda Rare Coins. Partly because I had a thought that I wanted to see become a reality which was taking an idea and cultivating it into fruition and partly because I thought it would be a fun and high-quality gift to our clientele. Why hockey jerseys? First of all, they look darn cool. Second, unlike a simple t-shirt, people who receive them and don’t necessarily care to wear them will most likely give it to someone who will wear it instead of throwing it away because of the high quality of these jerseys. Third, well, it’s advertising and that is why we are giving them to those who spend over $3,000 with us (Beginning today 3-29-2007) and selling them for $75 even though they cost us more than that to make. In hindsight, it probably would have been better to design either soccer, baseball, or football jerseys due to the oncoming lack of cooler temperatures (i.e. Spring and Summer) but oh well. Come autumn, everyone who got one free or purchased one from us hopefully will be wearing them. At least, and I hope, nobody throws them away and if someone just does not want it and has nobody to give it to, at the very least, they could give it to that bum everybody sees standing out on the street asking for change at the major intersections. I’m sure he would appreciate it and the high traffic area would ensure a good visual location for people to notice it. Not that having a homeless person as a spokesperson is a grand idea but at least ANACONDA will be spelled correctly.

Baltimore Market Report:

While our table location was not exactly stellar, we were at the back of the new hall C as I like to call the butt of the show. You probably didn’t find us unless you got lost. However, even with our less than acceptable table location, we did manage to do above average retail sales and managed to unload a few coins we’ve had for awhile and it was quiet enough for us to focus on our buying which is the main reason we go to shows in the first place. We came back with roughly $250,000 in coins for our website inventory along with about the same amount for client want lists which we had an easier time filling at this show than the last few. The buzz on the floor was good with many dealers finding homes for their early type at strong prices that many were more than happy to pay as it has been terribly difficult to find ACCEPTABLE early type and harder to find pieces. I say acceptable because it seems that roughly 70% of what we saw on the floor was not worth a second glance due to the majority of commodity type coins out there, overgrading and problem coins in slabs. Like usual, anything Draped, Flowing, or Capped was doing very well. You want a market summary of what is hot in 3 words? Rare, Quality, Early. These sum up what is hot in the market right now. Something that happened at this show that I was very happy to see was other dealers actually refusing to make offers on overgraded coins because they didn’t want to stock them even if the price was right. While I feel that the overgrading of coins by the services was partially responsible for the softening of prices lately, I’m excited to note the dichotomy of the current market. (Mainly because we deal in coins on the up-side of this dichotomy).

A Great Set to Build Right Now:

Thinking of changing direction? Want to start a new series but not sure which one to go with? You have a particular series in mind but aren’t sure if it’s the right time to start putting effort and money into it? You certainly don’t want to build a set when the prices are peaking. So what series is a good value to begin putting together? Here you go.

Peace Dollars – Yes, these guys have been notoriously soft for quite some time now despite the fact that it is one of the most collector friendly sets to build for several reasons.

1. There are no impossible key dates. The entire series is quite doable even on a modest budget.

2. They are easy to grade. Unlike with some of the earlier series, there’s really nothing tricky about grading peace dollars. When they have luster, they have luster, when there are contact marks, they are seldom hidden very well, and when they are high grade, they freakin’ glow!

3. Easy to start, but very difficult to aquire ultra high grade pieces. I think this is a plus because while you can have an amazing set in Gem, finding those MS66’s and MS67 can be a chore but it keeps you interested in that treasure hunter sort of way.

4. Prices for Peace dollars are not very dynamic (i.e. they haven’t changed much) and in my opinion, are overdue for an increase.

5. The ever-popular and legendary 1964-D Peace dollars are still out there waiting to surface and drive more collectors into the series.

6. They aren’t Morgans. Haha. Nothing against Morgans but the torch needs to be passed somewhere.

You definitely can’t accuse me for hyping my own inventory as we didn’t buy hardly any Peace Dollars for stock at the show but did buy a couple of high-end key dates for want lists and a couple of 1921’s in affordable grades.

I hope you enjoyed our market report. Whoops, forgot to mention that I’m almost done with the best offer feature for the website. I’ve coded everything except the acceptance code that will automatically generate an invoice on the fly, email a copy of it to you and myself, and update the database with the new system information. I’ve tested it out and it is VERY cool and it works quite well so far. Look for it to be introduced within the next couple of weeks before the Santa Clara show.

-Thanks,
-Brandon Kelley
