Question about silver content in English/Canadien coinage

When did they stop putting silver into their coins? I have some shillings, pence, crowns et. al.

dimes, quarters from Canada, teens, through the 1960's
trying to figure out which ones have silver and which ones dont.

much thanks!

  • UK coins were 92.5% silver until 1920 when they dropped to 50%. Silver was removed altogether in favour of Cupro-Nickel in 1946.

Canadian coinage had silver removed in 1968. There are some 1968 10c + 25c with silver.

The easiest way to distinguish them is to apply a magnet. Nickel will attract silver will not.

  • Canadian 10c was 80% from early 1920's to 1966, 1967 was a mix of 80% and 50% silver 10c coins and 1968 was a mix of pure nickel and 50% silver coins. 1969 began nickel only.

Same pattern goes for Canadian 25c as the 10c.

Canadian 50c was in 80 % silver from the early 1920's to 1967. In 1968, they were nickel only.

Canadian $1 was 80% silver until 1967. In 1968, they were nickel only.

There is some good info on this guy's pages. Has years of coins and contents and it calculates rough silver priices for each type of coin.
