Does anyone here collect gold ducats?

SkyManSkyMan Posts: 9,493 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm starting to consider collecting gold ducats of the period 1600 to 1800. Does anyone know of a good reference book that would cover this period? Hopefully the book would not just show a picture of the assorted coins, but also give an idea of what to watch out for, and give some historical background too.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Double Ducat Link This is a link to a thread I posted about a Hungarian Double Ducat, lots of good info on sources in the responses. I don't know too much about Ducats, but if I was not buried in overpriced US coins, I would be collecting 1500-1800 European gold.

    Skyman,
I have several ducats in my collection. Are you planning any particuliar country or ducats in general. I'm not aware of any specific book on ducats. I would buy the Friedberg's "Gold Coins of The World" 7th edition and/or (I say and) Krause's "Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins" 5th edition.

Thank you guys for your info.

I'm not planning on any specific country, just ducats in general. From the pictures I've seen of them they look pretty neat... gold, history, artistry... the whole nine yards.

A man after my own heart. I image ducats !!

You've been told correctly, there is no single book on the subject - even though there certainly should be. The ducat ranks near the top, if not at the top, of the list of the most important coins ever struck. You can however find a few books on the subject dealing with specific countries which issued ducats for the time periods you are interested in collecting. There is a book on the Netherlands ducat, which is the coin that holds 2nd place for being continuously struck with the same design for the longest period of time - since 1586 to date. The book is - The Dutch Gold Ducat by Albert A. J. Scheffers.

There are a couple on the Venetian ducat, which is the only coin that surpasses the Netherlands ducat for number of years issued with the same design - over 700 years. The Ventian Ducat And Its Imitations was largely written by Herbert E. Ives edited and annotated by Philip Grierson. It was published by the American Numismatic Society as part of the ANS Numismatic Notes & Monographs - No. 128. And then there is Zecca - The Mint of Venice in the Middle Ages by Alan M Stahl.

Beyond that, I know of no book written specifically about ducats. I searched for one for years. But you can find a good deal of info about them in other books. But you'll have to piece it together because that's all you'll find - bits and pieces. And you can find a good deal of info on the web if you take the time to search. You can start with this if you like - The Ducat

    Best of luck image
