Coins in the movie "The 300"

Just saw this gorefest a few hours ago, there were a couple of scenes with closeups of coins, does anyone know if the designs were
contempory with 480 BC.?

Warning, this movie is not for the squeamish -- impaling with swords and spears, blood and guts flying everywere and a very large
pile of dead Persians.

If it's not on Nickelodeon I probably won't see it....we do Nick, the Cartoon Network and PBS at my house. Now if you you want to talk about Susan B.s and Sacs I believe there were a couple of PowerPuff Girl episodes that dealt with those imageimageimage.

Actually, I'd be interested in hearing if the movie was accurate...it's nice to know someone did some homework.

How would you rate the film? Silly Hollywood crap or good movie.

I found it plenty entertaining, I don't know how accurate it was according to the historial record of the famous battle and various
aspects of Greek culture, there were a number of mystical and surreal imagary scenes that may or may not have been a part of the
lore of the battle. I suspect that Hollywood took a fair amount of liberties with various facts in order to make the movie.

The bravery of the 300 Greeks facing such overwhelming odds was to me the main selling point of the film and that to me made it
    a good and exciting movie.

A review that I read considered this movie a silly gorefest. Probably no credit to the real 300.

I would like to see Dmitri weigh in on this one.

Contemporary, perhaps - accurate no. This one of the more common coins of Xerses - image - They were also struck in silver.

As to the historical accuracy of the movie, parts were. But there was also a great deal of "artistic liberty". For example, a large part of the Persian fleet was destroyed in storms. A Greek traitor did lead the Persians around behind the Spartans enabling their defeat. And the quote of "... we shall fight in the shade" is attributed to one of the Spartan warriors.

The coins were definitely not even close... Actually I have this problem watching many historical films: big mistakes get made all the time concerning coins. A favorite example is a scene in the Gangs of New York, set during the Civil War in NYC. Money is changing hands at one point, but it is all silver coins (at a time when silver was famously hoarded and paper was just about all you could get)... Frustrating.

In truth closer to 1200 men fought, not 300. There were 300 Spartans who get the big credit and around 900 Thebes who voluntarily stayed behind to fight as well. But still for 1200 men to make such a defense and take anywhere from 65-75k along with them is an amazing feat.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

Watched it last night - it was pretty good, in my opinion. It blows my mind what we are able to do with CG effects these days.

Your TV viewing sounds like ours - although we also get Noggin

I don't know if the movie is accurate but the book that it is based on - a graphic novel by Frank Miller isn't
