can you penny guys give me your two cents?

yeah, pun intended I guess.....image

I like the look of this UNC 1/2 penny. For you British penny guys, are there anything on this coin's obverse or reverse that should give me pause?

thanks!

Doug

IMO, that coin is an eyesore. Stay away from coppers which have this type of staining.

This is a mini hoard date, and with some patience you can find a much, much nicer specimen.

Wow, and I thought it looked pretty good. Always learning... (especially about staining), I would have called it toning.image

I would not go so far as to call it an eyesore, but there are better examples out there.

thanks guys! I too didn't think it is in the 'eyesore' category, but then again, i don't know much about them. Are these around in full red or red-brown, or is this too much to ask for a 200 year old penny? thanks!

Well, he updating his site apparently, but Evan Gale has a 1799 in 65RD (not sure if it was PCGS or NGC) which was listed at $850. I sold him my example back in 2004 or so for $450. It was an NGC MS65RD. I think NEN recently sold one in the HIGH $600s. So, some collectors are definitely paying over $600+ for gem red specimens at this time.

    I think you'd have little problem finding a problem-free, TPG-certified 64RB for ~$250 +/-

The toning is not as troublesome to me as the scratch that arcs down from the bust through the "G" of GEORGIOUS.

    What Aethelred said.

I don't think it's an eyesore at all- the sharp details are great. However, the darker areas are a minor distraction to my eye.

<< <i>Are these around in full red or red-brown >>

Absolutely. And not very long ago they were affordable (in fact, relatively cheap) in RD and RB, but those salad days have probably ended.

I agree that the "scratch" on the obverse looks like it might be a die crack.

My verdict? I rate this coin average. Not fantastic, but not bad, either.

The thumb mark doesn't really bother me that much. I like the coin.

you guys think it will go in the MS grades, or do you see any "rubs"?

  • Second one is much nicer than the first which I call "the leather look". #2 look MS from the pics to me. image As far as grade goes...........................64BN at NGC.

Second one is definitely nicer, even with the faint fingerprint.

I bought an ANACS MS63 RB a few years back for something like $65-75, from a forum member, then sold it for something like $100, also to a forum member, but lost money because I had stupidly listed it as an eBay "featured" auction in two categories. That is the last time I ever wasted money on that. Mine was a slabbed coin with lots of red, featured in two categories, and I had started it low with no reserve, while another coin that was browner, raw, and had a high start price and no featured status closed for more money. That really "dunked my hat in the creek" to use a ladymarcovanism.

I "stole" that ANACS MS63 RB from a person who has already responded to this thread. Another person who has responded to this thread saw the coin but wasn't much impressed with it because he was taking a break from British coins at the time and was spending his money on political collectibles.

Who would sell it for such a low price? Where can I buy them for this amount? What a . . .

Yes, be sure to take a strong sedative before viewing. They are certified "freaky" in their purity......shouldn't exist, but they do.

Doogy, IMO the second example is a nice improvment over the first 1/2 d. Also, that first one has what looks like minor rub on the waves.

    Here's the 1799 1/2d. I sold to Evan.

The image is about halfway down the page.

And hey, I think that was my inaugural post in these parts. image
