If it were me, forget rolling, I'd be digging my way up out of the ground to go throttle someone. From the link: "The Mint has confirmed (8/1/2007) that an original die, handmade by the Pistrucci has been reworked and new master tools created."
They took one of his original dies and reworked it into THIS MONSTROSITY???
"Using a combination of hand engraving skills and digital technology, detail lost over the decades was painstakingly restored."
I think they got the wrong final word. I think "removed" was the term they were looking for.
Hmmmm... lets take it a step further: almost anything of significance in today's world seems to have been dumbed (and cheapened) down; pick your field (exceptions obviously exist) and it seems to be almost global.
As to coin engraving, I could believe that our current world crop of youthful engravers don't want to repeat the past but would rather articulate their skills in their own new artistic style. However, simplistically reducing engraving detail and generally (almost loosely) then copying the style of the original only results in trozau's excellent portrayal of today's fecal coin matter.
Therefor I ask the question: which country today is producing the most coins (for general circulation) of quality engraving and beauty?

Is this a coca-cola trick to force folks to beg to bring back the original?

<< <i>While one can argue about taste and artistic merit, the sad reality is that the new design is clearly a giant step backward. >>
They have taken a great work of art and turned it into a silly, cartoonish, pile of crap with .2354 ounces of gold in it!

<< <i>I read about this recutting of the dies. Firstly I have to say that if anyone has taken a tool to an original handmade Pistrucci that is a crime but has anyone seen one of these in hand? The images on the Royal Mint website look quite different to Chards

I am sure Chard's photography detracts from the actual coin appearance but both of the ones shown are his photographs and he is the first to say that for some reason the new coins are a bear to photograph. Even the one from the BRM website that you linked has an elven look to St George. Don't you agree?
