I'm sorry you had to put up with such a person...I sincerely hope it was worth while, and you got everything you could so you don't EVER have to return...
PM his shop location to me. I'd dearly love to go in and needle the jerk. You know, like I'd pick up a nice toner and say, "Did you AT this coin or buy it like this?"
Sounds just like one of my local coin shops, I wrote a very unpleasent letter to him and informed him that he would never see another piece of my collections pass through his door. His response was thrown in the garbage unopened and unanswered, I was that PO'ed about my experience. What's with these people, they are so antisocial that they become coin shop owners?
Wow, what a downer. He deserves to be put out of business permanently.

The shame of it, though, is that you spent the whole day and your good money (which I'm sure he didn't belittle) there, thus reinforcing his behavior.
As much hassle as it was for you with the drive & weather, and as much as you eventually found coins you needed/liked, I'd still have asked to borrow his phone book, looked up a competitor, and left the store with the page still left open to "coin dealers".............. and then maybe even called him from the other store to let him know how much I'd spent there instead!
What a jerk! But with 6 hours of driving involved, I probably would have bought something too--especially if I happened to know more about it than he did .
Anyone we should know to avoid? I only know of one specific Chicago area dealer and I would be beyond astonished to find out it was that one.
So I agree....out him so our imaginations don't hurt the innocent .
What a bummer though....
Double edit: the first for spelling and the second to point out that it was clarified that the dealer in question is NOT HJB (which was beyond unimaginable, but nice to have confirmed) per one of the deleted posts. A Third Comment: Margaritas tonight!
JMO, but I can’t fathom remaining in any coin shop for 6 ½ hours, let alone the one you described…and you gave them money? Sorry, but I don’t get it . -Preussen

yup, me neither. I won't give anyone my time or money that is a blatant jerk or that trys to belittle me. I can have a fairly thick skin for awhile, then the Marine may come out in me. This is just a hobby, although you spent a bunch of time driving, i would have just found a nice jazz bar or something (with good service) and made the best of my day. Sorry to hear about your misadventure; but i agree with the others. you should 'out him' or at least PM us so we know not to deal with these asses.
Sounds like a thoroughly rotten day for you, and I'm sorry you had such a lousy experience
I'm with some of the others here: Out him. Please. For the general benefit of the hobby, I think his name, his shop, and his internet persona, Ebay ID included, should be made public. I wish to make darned certain that I never give him any of my business, but if I don't know who he is, I might end up accidentally doing what I do not wish to do.
<< <i>It never ceases to amaze me how some dealers don't even begin to realize how much they are alienating potential customers . >>
Apparently, they're not alienating potential customers at all...some stay for 6 1/2 hours of abuse, buy stuff, and then they complain about their terrible experience .
Sorry, Dan. I shouldn't have replied this way, but I just couldn't resist...I just don't get it.
Peace -Preussen

All deleted. I guess I'm not a stand-up bad guy because I didn't turn immediately around and drive back 3 hours in the snow without purchasing anything and making it a wasted trip. Excuse the hell out of me.
<< <i>All deleted. Preussen: Go take a flying leap. >>
Dan: I'm sorry if the truth hurt. From your descriptions, I would agree that the dealer apparently sucks, but it also seems obvious to me that you were a more-than-willing recipient of any abuse and/or poor customer service. Not only did you accept it, you rewarded it. JMO -Preussen

I guess I am kicking a dead horse at this point...
Treating employees like this in front of costumers is not something to be proud of...
In all fairness... if one is looking through an inventory, that takes time, especially for world coins... German States, France and England can take time. Did I say Mexico?
Lets remember this is a hobby and it is suppost to be fun. I have bought from afew dealers I would not want to sit down and have a beer with... that is part of life... and perhaps I am not their favorite customer either. Dealing with folks is part of collecting... and that goes with the territory. Sharing "war stories" is part of collecting too.
So lets move on and get over the bump in the road... there are too many coins worthy of more serious discussions...

Since you insist upon flogging a dead horse for whatever perverse joy you get out of it, I'll call a spade a spade: You're a holier-than-thou moralizing jackass.
Since I would have already invested the 6 hours of driving time and $50 in gasoline expenses to get there and back, just what exactly would have leaving the coins on the counter and stomping out of there accomplished other than punishing myself?
Will I go back? No.
Will I ever recommend that others shop there? No.
It's called making the best of an unpleasant situation.
But to imply that I had some sort of an obligation to leave there empty handed is moronic. Especially in light of the fact that THE MESSAGE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RECEIVED.
The only result would have been a complete and utter waste of my time... sort of like replying to you has become.
