Any Canadian 50 Cent collectors?

If there are, do you know what the definitive list of uncirculateds is from 1968 to date? I have the Canadian coin book, but are there some "W" mintmark coins mixed in to the list?

I hope yu have a lot of time and patience. The RCM is striking so many varieties of the same coins it can drive you crazy.

    Check Colonial Acres for

    1960-1969 50 cents

    1970-1979 50 cents

    1980 to 1989 50 cents

    1990-1999 50 cents

    2000 to present 50 cents

After seeing how many dollar coins they churn out each year, I've decided I don't need one of each type and variety any more. image

  • I got 1968-1989 from my local dealer today. He sold me the 50c and 10c from the mint sets for $1.25 together. Not a bad price I figure. I just got a few from Colonial Acres. The biggest reason I'm collecting 50c and 10c is that there is not a lot of design variance in those and I like the designs as well. Bluenose and the coat of arms are nice. The 25c are a nightmare, with all the variants.

What? You mean you don't want to have to buy 5 to 10 different 25 cent pieces every year? image

  • Nope.image I think I'm going to hang onto the 2000 caribou 25c I have just in case I want to ever do a 25c caribou collection. If I collected 25c, it would just be caribou only. None of the other nonsense, except maybe 1992. No fun, am I?

  • IMHO, the nicest 25 cents, are pre '37
  • They are nice. I got a circulated 1917, 1918 and 1929 today. Don't think there's a 1921 in the future though...lol.

Whoops, I mean 50c here, but the design was similar to the 25c.

I love George V 50 cent pieces, but the Canadian coins are too expensive for me to collect by date in AU and up. I bought the Newfoundland 50 cents instead and got one Canadian 1911 in VF and a 1919 in AU for my type set.

The difference in price between F and EF coins is huge in that series, and anything in BU is really pricey.

  • If it has the Canadian coat of arms on it, I 'll collect it. Otherwise I pass. What a stick in the mud I am, eh?image

I can see 1932 50c is gonna be a pain the rump to find. Even Colonial doesn't have one. Only 19,213 were minted.

You should do a collection of 100% nickel 5c pieces, Shiro. That would be a cool collection to look at, especially with nickel prices going thru the roof. Canadian 100% nickel coins are getting real close to melt. I live close enough to Canada to get a decent amount in change. Those plated nickels from the Korean War years...ugh. The steel core is usually exposed and corroding. I just got a 1953 the other day, but alas not one of the right ones...darn.

I'll collect nickel, tombac, and steel 5 cent coins up to 1987 (as far as my album goes).

I'm glad to RCM doesn't crank out as many 5 cent commemoratives for collectors as they do 25 cent, 50 cent, and one dollar coins.

Here are the recent collector issues:

2000 5-cent Les Voltigeurs de Quebec
    2001 5-cent Royal Military College
    2002 5c Vimy Ridge
    2004 D-Day 5-cent Set
    2005 VE Day 5-cent set
1945-2005 Canada 5-cent 60th Anniversary of the Victory in Europe Brilliant Uncirculated
    Gold Plated V-Day 2005 5-cent

This 1901 is the only Canadian 50c I have in a personal collection (actually, my daughter's 1901 Victorian type set).

Even in this relatively low grade, it was a fairly tough coin. This one cost me 70 to 75 bucks, as I recall.

    image

It's low grade but original, and I like it. If I am going to complete the 1901 Victorian type set (all homeland British as well as Empire coins with Victoria's portrait), this coin will actually be the key, when I upgrade it. The Canadian 1901 50c in higher grade is tougher than any of the other 47 coins, including the gold. (For obvious reasons, I have chosen to ignore the proof-only 1901 Australian half-sovereigns, with their five-figure pricetags).

So yes, you could say I collect Canadian 50-cent pieces, even though I have a collection of but one coin.

On a more spammy note, I just bought a pretty nice AU-ish George VI Canadian 50c from the 1940s at my antique mall booth the other day. It has some pretty colors on the reverse, as I recall. If anybody's interested, I can dig it outta the box of as-yet-unpriced new stuff and let you know what it is.
