OT- 1956 England-France union

I was watching the evening news with Brian Williams and there was a quick story about a "grand daddy merger" (Brian Williams words-not mine) regarding a visit by the French Prime Minister to London in 1956 and apparently there was a proposal that involved a union between France and England. Apparently, the BBC obtained information in connection with this possibility that was released today. Did anyone else watch this or hear about it?
Honest, I am just as shocked as the British Historian who apparently fell out of his chair as he heard this...

<< <i>[Mollet] was also an Anglophile who admired Britain both for its help in two world wars and its blossoming welfare state. >>
It figures he'd like Britain for the latter reason.
At least the union would have kept France from funding Scots separatists.
